Nope, nothing to do with AOHell for me! I have the same from a recent Amazon Purchase which I received and have been debited and credited for the amount from PTI Europe also. This was only for a CD at just £4.09 but I wish now with hindsight that I had ordered two giant plasma screens!!:D :D

I have now discovered that PTI Europe were debiting a payment to Ancestry (the genealogy website). The payment was debited, then credited against PTI on my First Direct credit card, but has now been shown correctly as Ancestry. If you spot a PTI Europe transaction wait a couple of days to see if it is rectified by your bank/credit card company.

    further reply from amazon today

    Dear Customer

    Thank you for contacting Amazon.co.uk.

Please accept my sincere apologies for any inconvenience this may have caused you.

I highly appreciate your patience and understanding in this case.

I apologise for the delay in responding to your e-mail message.

Please be assured that all of us here are working very hard to provide a thorough, personal reply to each of our customers as quickly as possible.

For the period from 19-March to 25-March, your credit card statement or on-line banking statement may indicate a transaction by “PTI Europe” or “PTI Europe Region”. This transaction is actually the purchase you made on Amazon.co.uk during this period, and is the result of a coding error made by Amazon’s payment processor.

Our payments processor is working directly with your card issuer or bank to correct this. We are informed that, depending on the bank that issued your credit card, the correction will read one of two ways:

    - Transaction with the incorrect descriptor will be removed from the statements, and a new transaction with the correct "Amazon" description will be inserted; OR

    - You will first receive a credit to your account for the amount of the original purchase, followed by a new line item for the same purchase with the correct “Amazon” description.

If you have not yet seen a correction on your statement, please contact your card issuer or bank directly to check on the progress they are making in your case.

Future purchases will reflect our company name “Amazon” on your card statements.

Please note that, regardless of how the correction appears on your statement, your account will only be charged for the purchase you authorized.

In the unlikely event that you might have been charged a fee by your bank or card issuer for exceeding an overdraft or credit limit directly as a result of this mislabeling issue, please contact your card issuer or bank directly to request the reversal of the fee.

To view the amounts that have been charged for your orders, please visit the Your Account link located at the top of any page of our website.

We apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused, and appreciate your understanding.

  • I recollect that PTI Europe is the single company constituted for tax purposes behind the various trading names of Amazon in Europe.

They obviously totally lost control of their payments system or, as a much less informative e-mail from Amazon to me put it, there was a "technical error on the credit card processor end".

I haven't gained or lost, but I was very confused by three recent orders being charged for a second time and immediately refunded on 31st March.

I am asking Amazon to undertake to notify me immediately by email if such errors occur in future and if they can’t make such an undertaking, to remove all payment card data from their systems as soon as any future orders have been processed to obviate the risk of further double charging.

Those of you who are still in credit with Amazon must expect a debit correction soon, but we could all quite reasonably ask for some compensation for the inconvenience.

I am thinking about taking this to the BBC, as I think what we can see here is just the tip of an iceberg.

As a matter of interest, has anyone with an Amazon account not been affected by a spurious debit and/or credit recently?
  • .

I don't have accounts with ANY of the companies mentioned so far so still haven't a clue how this happened to me!

What's really surprising me is that with all the hoo-ha going on in connection with PTI (and banks!) ..... I haven't seen or heard anything about it in the "media".

Is it being hushed up ?

    .
  • Ive had same problem with my AOL monthly payment
  • I too have had a strange transaction from this company, i bought some clothes from the Abercrombie and Fitch website to see it had been taken out of my account as normal and then to discover it had been refunded back again! strange but can't complain, got free clothes!
