Citibank - Advice for you - Good News!

Hi All. There have been many people (myself included) that have Visa Debit cards from Citibank where you can only use it in a Chip and Pin machine meaning you could not not use it with signatures etc etc. I refer specfically to cards that are issued on the 'Access' account...' People with unperfect credit histories....

Many people have experienced occassions where you have maybe filled up with Petrol or tried to pay for goods and had issues because the retailer had no C&P facility or their facilty was not available.

Well......a letter dropped through my door from Citibank this morning...and I quote:

"Dear Mr X,

Important Information regarding your Citibank Debit Card.

We are writing to inform you of an issue we have identified with a small percentage of our debit cards. Your card may not work in point-of-sale terminals when it is swiped and signed for. However, it will still work using Chip and Pin point-of-sale terminals and ATM's.

A replacement Debit Card will be sent to you shortly.....

Whooo hooo! Finally a full use Citibank debit card that will and can be accepted anywhere!!

That's great news:beer: I think all banks should issue a 'proper' debit card without cheque guarantee. If there are no credit facilities what's the problem.
Can I ask you? Did you have defaults or more serious things on your credit file? I am tempted to apply but I still have bankruptcy on my files; even though I've been discharged over 3 years:rolleyes:

Hi. I have had this account for over a year now and at the time of opening I had and still have shocking credit. I do not know what their selection criteria is now though.

I believe that Lloyds TSB now offer a full visa debit card (except chq guarantee) to their basic account holders.

Hi received this account with £100 cheque guarantee card in Dec 2006 and was a discharged bankrupt at the time. I now have a £500 overdraft with them.

I have never had any problems using my card at Pay at pump’s etc.

    Regards

I got this letter the other day too and my new card came in the post today. I signed up to this account before they split it into 2 types of account e.g the free 'Access' one and the monthly charge one. I don't know if the old card worked or not when swiped as it's only ever been used with chip&pin or online. :)

Is it still easy to get an account with them? My credit is pants to say the least.

thanks OP I too got my new card today...although my old one was a cheque one but who care's I have had the cheque book for over a year and never used it...small loss...but I have been having problems buying anything over £300...so I thought this was there solution...guess not...although I am quite happy with citibank I find amusing that as we all opted for the free account it's taken them a year almost to issue the new cards...lets see if I get any grief when I buy my new americian fridge/freezer in may...if they stop my card once more...I'll...blow on them...anyway apart from that I have found them ok...and yes they don't seem to care if you have bad credit or not...go for it...:)

I got my new card yesterday which is good news as I have had so many problems using it. Fingers crossed thats it sorted.

Ice re spending large amounts on your card it the card is declined then email Citibank and demand a full explantion for this. They will reply with a standard email and a offer of £20 as good will. This is happened to me a few times :D

well they didn't offer me anything....:rolleyes:good for you...I tried buying a PS3 from play.com for £309.99 I rang the bank they said it wasn't verified by visa...then I got alot of odd emails from play.com asking me to ring them...I stupidly did on the number in the email!!!!...and they asked me my name address and date of birth...I said but you already know this as it's on my account...:confused:I didn't give them anything...then I got another asking me to send them a bank statement and a bill......I deleted the emails and went else where......I drew out £340 in scarborough and went to a shop..I paid £5 more than I would have on play.com but at least I got what I paid for....same thing happed in november with a tv but that was a scam...but I haven't been having any problems in shops :confused:which has made me wonder...what citi is up to...as I had the cheque card...now I have just the normal one...for the access account...but if it works then fine...although I did email citi internally from my online banking and told them that I would be purchaseing this item but still it was stopped...lets hope I can get the Fridge Freezer as it's £499...I'll ring them on the day and tell them that I am about to order it...that should do it shouldn't it...:confused:but thanks anyway...and if this gets stopped I'll will demand something back...:)

Yes, I've had this letter, three times now.

It meant nothing more than there was a problem with the magnetic strip on my card and as a result they had in fact blocked my card each time without warning, meaning I could not withdraw any cash from any ATM.

All three times that this happened was within three months, and I had to wait for up to five days each time without any access to my money. The last time it happened a couple of weeks ago was the last straw for me and I have since closed my account with them and gone to Alliance & Leicester instead.
