April 2008 Grocery Challenge

Thankfully today has turned out to be a NSD. I found some more tubs in the back of the kitchen cupboard(its a mess-full of plastic stuff and casserole dishes) and so I made my chicken curry with yesterday's chicken minus the breasts.
1 jar of Sharwoods rogan jush approx 90p
I tin of value curry(asda or tesco) 7p
1 pack of passata 29p
Qtr pack of frozen onions 25p
2 spoons of curry powder-any variety 5p
about half a chicken (reduced) 1.40
tin of chick peas 19p
half bag of white rice 28p
total cost 2.46-serves 7
35p per portion
If you dont have so much chicken, bulk it out with extra can of chick peas, dried pearl barley or dried lentils. I could have made it cheaper that way but I really wanted to use up the chicken..
Carcass is simmering on the stove-the bits off of this will become cat food-better than paying 55p per can for watery slop!
Just made the veggy bean pate with the kidney beans which was on this thread earlier. Excellent! Never will I be buying again!!!Annual Grocery budget 2018 is £1500 pa £125 calendar month £28.84 pw for 3 adults0 -
Any chance for the recipe?
Thank you
Egon
Hi, this recipe is taken from one of Delia's books.
This can be made using a blender/food processor.
This uses alot of fresh basil but its worth it!;)
Serves 2
2oz (50g) fresh basil leaves
1 large clove of garlic
1 tablespoon pine kernals (i used pine nuts)
6 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil
1oz (25g) pecorino romano. ( i used parmesan)
salt
Place all the ingredients into processor except for the parmesan
and blitz. Stir in the parmesan.
As an alternative to that you could roast some peppers and add those instead of the basil.'Be kinder than necessary, for everyone you meet is fighting some kind of battle'0 -
Hi everyone,
hope you`re all keeping well?. Had another NSD today(3 in a row), sooo proud of myself(sad ehh!).
Just a quick question to all you great cooks out there. I have cooked my chicken, that we were suppose to have had yesterday and I will boil the carcass for stock and soup, but not quite sure what to do with the juices. The juices I would normally wait until they have cooled and turned to jelly, then throw away(head now lowered in shame!), but want to use as much of the chicken as possible. Could I possible freeze this and then what would all you wonderful people do with it. I have had a look at my limited number of cook books, but just can`t find anything. Also, this is a mighty large bird, Having chicken and chips tonight, hubby and boys will have chick in their lunches and possible chicken curry tomorrow for dinner, but don`t really want to look like a chicken, so any other ideas would be wonderful(will do batches of the chicken curry for freezer).Grocery Challenge 2013: July week 1 £90/£87.41

I have a funny feeling I am going to skip the gym tonight in favour of a trip to Tesco and (not as far away but still a good old walk) to see if I can get bread flour at a good price, and if I have time before Lidl closes I'm going to investigate the Asian specials I mentioned earlier.
Hiya
I saw the asian specials in Lidl as well but had a quick look on the asda website and they seem to have the same size tin of coconut milk for 34p.

Well Im also at this stage but Ive not actually frozen it before(the juices). I will let them go cold, divide them up into about four tubs and freeze as chicken stock-unless anyone can tell me better?
Just been separating the stuff on the carcass-of course, we could make chicken soup but the cat wouldnt get a dinner and we may look so like chickens that she might want to eat us instead :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl: so the cat wins!Annual Grocery budget 2018 is £1500 pa £125 calendar month £28.84 pw for 3 adults0 -

Hi Savvymummy, I seem to remember reading on one of the threads that it's the amount of fat in your loaf that determines how long it keeps, ie the more oil/butter or whatever you use, the longer it keeps. Doesn't help too much if you're after a healthier diet!.
I use about 25g butter or 1 tablespoon of oil to 500g flour in my bread and it usually keeps at least 2 days - it might possibly keep for 3 days but there's never been enough left for me to test that out!.

Hi Bobbykins, many thanks for that. I am trying some more dough this afternoon with extra fat, so will see how I get on.Grocery Challenge 2013: July week 1 £90/£87.41
