The "leaf salad" or "cut and come-again salad" seed mixes have grown successfully for me indoors on windowsills. Dobies seeds have a stir fry greens mix which is green and tasty. I grew them on seed trays, but you could use anything so long as it has drainage holes (and a tray for drips underneath). Salad leaves don't need very much depth of compost.

I planted rocket seeds and flat leaf parsley seeds last weekend and put them on windowsill and the rocket has now sprouted!!!! very exciting as I've never grown anything from seed before. Nothing happening with the flat leaf parsley yet but here's hoping

Oooh, I've just bought some cut and come again salad. On the instructions though it didn't say that I had to cover it in cling film, but I see Sylvia did. Any advice?

I germinated my first lot of seeds under cling flim but then I later put more in the same pot and didn't use any cling film and they germinated.

Cling film just saves you watering and over-watering the compost.

in homebase & other garden centres they have propogating lids but these can be expensive... however, I discovered in Tescos that they sold clear plastic ' pudding' bowls which fit perfectly over a plastic pot (can get free from garden centres / freecycle)
Another way to do this is to use tops cut off fizzy pop bottles, or alternatively when I use cling film I put matches in the edges of the tray to keep it a bit above the earth and give it more room to breathe.
Salad leaves are great - speedy seeds do exactly what they say on the tin!

The other way to grow greens on the windowsill is in a propogater - seeds such as alfalfa etc

This might be going a bit far... but I put some shelves up on my outside wall (south facing) and have pots of herb & veg in that - its my vertical garden - you could do the same inside or out though...

    Good luck!

  • I was speaking to someone the other day, he said him and his kids grew runner beans as house plants! Instead of staking them, they let them hang (I guess like a hanging pot of ivy) and they were really pretty and grew with no problems?

    I'm tempted.... :D
