Indoor Herb & Veg growing

Hi everyone,

I have been reading the greenfingered board for a while now and have taken inspiration to grow my own herbs and vegetables. The only issue being I live in a flat on the 1st floor ... so I have read that there are some things you can grow indoors - herbs and some veg. Well I am biting the bullet and giving it a go. I am very improportionately excited about this!

This is the first time I have actually posted on the boards but felt as you all had been the inspiration for my money saving (and mild obsession) I would share my blog with you dedicated to this cause

It is http://sylvsgoinggreen.blogspot.com/

Thank you all for your help (you may have been answering other people's queries but you've helped me nontheless)

Sylv x

Hi Sylv, great, good going! I only have a small garden but have so far sown carrots, tomatoes and salad leaves, all in containers. Like you, I'm trying to cut down my weekly food shop and hoesntly, fed up of having to bin veg, it doesn't seem to last very long, even in the 'fridge.

Another thing I've done as well is, have bought a couple of pot grown herbs from the supermarkets from their 'out of date' section. They're not designed to last as plants and mostly pot bound when you buy them as fresh. All I've done its to split them between several pots to give the root systems room to spread and now have healthy herbs. You can keep these on a windowsill and just use when required.

I'm lucky to have an allotment but I still grow herbs indoors on my kitchen windowsil I have really good success with basil and normally end up with frsh basil all year round.

But one of those 4 tier mini greenhouse I have two each with the extra fleece cover (you can pick them up for £12.99 with the two covers) and in the winter I have pots of salad leaves and herbs inside.
    Kind Regards

    Hi Sylv,

I'm in a 1st floor flat too and am currently only growing basil and coriander (although the coriander got a bit dried out over the weekend and isn't looking so healthy). I shall follow your blog with interest as I'm thinking of trying to grow some herbs/veg on my windowsills too.

    Good luck

  • More suggestions please! Same problem here!

I'm good at killing herbs

But spring onions were a surprise success, if you don't mind them getting a bit big...

What I'd really like is salad leaves, as they cost a bomb and often go off in the fridge. Seeds never germinate, although kept one of those "living salads" alive for a couple of weeks - was about 3 quid though!

  • Packet of seeds (from Wilko or Homebase I think), sprinkled onto bog standard compost in a wide but shallow pot, kept on kitchen windowsill (indoors).

Bit of a bodge job but they came up well - and have much stronger flavour! I pulled off the papery old leaves as they got in a bit of a tangle
