well by they ,you are referring to RM
if 'they' didnt hand the item over would you have physically taken it?
those working witin RM follow the guidelines laid down by RM
FYI RM are red hot on collecting customs charges now and a tracking system has been put in place for this very thing
you will now see a special delivery style bar code/tracking number on charge items
I would have been entitled to, provided I paid the part of the charge relating to customs, it is their added on £8 fee which the refusal to pay does not allow them to keep possession of the item or refuse to hand it over.

as i said before, good luck with that
again you are mixing those who work for rm and rm
if i have a customs charge that isnt paid (all charges are logged to the delivery office accounts) then it is treated that i have stolen the money
feel free to lodge your issues via head office but i can assure you if you came to my DO ,you wouldnt be walking away with the item without paying.
trust me,im not being accused of being the thief for your £8

Again, it's not the custom charge I'm talking about, it's the added on handling fee they were looking for, and again, your offer of good luck is pointless since this has already happened, I don't need luck at this stage I have nothing being shipped in from the U.S.

If you don't hand over the item you're in breach of the Postal services Act 2000, which, in case your wondering, trumps RM guidelines.

we have had this on the boards before
since postcomm dont seem to have a problem with rm doing this, then i will follow the instructions of my employer.
its not guidelines but my job and part of my duties.
if rm deem it to be so then they accept the flack for it.
personally i would happily have hmrc deal with all customs charges directly as its a pita dealing with whining people all day saying they already paid their postage

the last guy who said i would be commiting a criminal offence and would soon be arrested has been conspicous by his absence on mse

You could obviously attempt to pass the blame on to RM, (under the principle of vicarious liability) and in this instance where they are telling you to do it in a way that is contrary to the law (and carries a prison sentence of upto 6 months) you'd have a pretty strong case but the fact remains that if someone refuses to pay the handling fee and you don't hand over the item because of this then you are breaking the law.

All i've said in this thread is that they are not entitled to hold onto the item, which is true, but you took exception to this and suggested by giving me the item they were doing me a favour when in fact they were obligated by law to do so. Perhaps those at the Glasgow depot i attended are better versed in the law, who knows? I've no issue with paying, they're entitled to charge a handling fee and on the occassion in question ahd i not forgotten to take along the relevant amount of cash they'd have received their fee.

and as i said before, until rm state differently i will continue to do so.
ive seen emails from rm/PF on this and they feel their point stands
how much effort/cost do you think it costs RM?
given customs chages are now fully tracked liked special deliveries??

I edited my last post just after you've posted (before i read your post) and added in a little, so I should say that i totally agree with you that they are entitled to charge, they're just not entitled to hold onto the item if someone refuses to pay their handling fee.

sorry if i am stepping on anyones toes by posting this here :D

I have just received the dreaded customs charge note through the door, regarding a dvd box set i bought from the US.

it just seems excessive (even taking into acount handling fee) the item's value is £39.61 and the amount i am being charged is £15.17 so almost half of the item's value.

does this sound right to those ITK

also if i don't collect it will it be returned to sender?

cheers for any helpful info
Where the !!!! has the Shrug gone! just doesn't cut it...:think::huh: and these don't come close
  • Well the handleing charge (in this case) equates to a large % of the value of the goods which makes it look like the total charges are so much.

If it has come from over-seas I'm not sure what happens re: returning to sender.
 I have a poll / discussion on Economy 7 / 10 off-peak usage (as a % or total) and ways to improve it but I'm not allowed to link to it so have a look on the gas/elec forum if you would like to vote or discuss.
