I think it's great that you want to be helpful to others , but you do also have to safeguard yourself and your property at the same time. IMO you obviously have misgivings or you wouldn't have posted on here? FWIW my views are similar to those expressed by Pastures New on this one. There will also be folk in Wales who could benefit from a bit of kindness, with less uncertainty involved for you.

Thanks - it's not all about being kind, there's every chance that this guy is a "normal" lodger... I came here to find out how I could safeguard myself, and do all possible checks before I sign the contract.

I actually feel a lot better about it as a result of all the comments and side-research from today! I will check the money has arrived, and explain that the agreement is conditional on seeing his visa when he gets here.

  • I wouldn't touch this with a bargepole.

Incidentally, if you have 3 lodgers will that make it a house in multiple occupation?

[/list]So his Visa will also serve as second-hand proof of his savings?

In order to get Entry Clearance, he will have to satisfy the Entry Clearance Officer (not the Ambassador) that he has enough funds to live on and not be a burden to public funds.

After all, if he can't show me his Visa when he arrives, he ain't coming through my front door.

If he can't show you a visa, hard to see how he could get into the country at all (-:

Dear Badgerlady, you seem very kind, but may I point out he has ALREADY broken the rules by lying about you being his cousin for the WU transfer!

It may well be that there are local banking rules in his home country that make transferring funds abroad to non-relatives a difficult process.

Just a side issue... have you checked your household insurance?

I had 1 lodger once and had to change my insurance; she asked if her mate could also move in and I had to change my insurance again. It was quite hard to find a company that would insure for 2 lodgers, I imagine for 3 is nigh on like rocking horse poo.

I'd hate your posting 3 months down the line to say "AARRGH lodger's run off wi' mi' best silver ... and not insured "
