Rip off carpet purchase HELP!

I arranged for a carpet shop person to call and measure up the stairs and hall for a carpet. he called, measured and was about to leave when I stopped him asked how many yards we'd need and the cost of fitting.
he said fitting would be £50-£55 and we'd need 13-14 yards
said to pay shop for carpet and fitter direct for fitting.
fitter came with carpet today and I was suprised to see it was the same man who measured up. Job completed , carpet nice and I am pleased with work quality but we have a large piece of carpet left over, the fitter , who I believe to be the shop owner said "they've sent too much must be end of a roll".
I was given the invoice, paid it by cheque and paid him for fitting by cheque he charged £90 for fitting.
When I checked the invoice I noticed it doesnt state yardage just says "quantity 1 " and a total price in the price colunm. I measured up the new fitted carpet and its no more than 11 yards, I've been charged for 14 so have actually paid for the big left over piece and other small pieces.
the carpet is plain with no patten repeat.
All in all its about £100 overcharged inc the extra for the fitting.
So I've cancelled the cheques and intend on posting a cheque to the shop for 11 yards of carpet and £55 for fitting.
I think there is some correct wordage to use in the letter to accompany the cheque is it "best and final payment"?
please help me I cant afford to be ripped off like this I only earn £6 an hour and its taken me a year to save up for the carpet in the first place.

Just a note; carpets done in metres, not yards, and a metre is longer than a yard so will be some discrepancy there.
Did you not get the quote in writing?
I work for a carpet company and no way do we do any work without first giving a quote.
He probably charged more for fitting cos of you paying by cheque cos will need to declare it rather than bung it in his back pocket.I'm a Nanny again! 23rd April 2012

What shape is your floor? We had loads & loads of carpet left over after it was fitted & it was because we have a couple of circular bits in the hall & as it had to be all 'one piece' they needed to order much more than the area actually covered on the floornothing to see here, move along...0

As already asked, were you given a written quote?0

Another thought occurred to me; Why didn't you query the price when you were writing the cheques out?
Seems unfair that you happily paid the man, then when he went you stopped your cheques.
You could have sorted it out there and then and he could have answered the questions you have asked here.
Asea also has a good point about the excess carpet.
Have you also arranged to return the left over carpet to him?
Because you havent paid for it technically it is his.I'm a Nanny again! 23rd April 2012

I cant believe these repies. I've been overcharged and the shop owner/fitter measured wrongly and ordered too much carpet for the job. Your all insinuating its my fault.
I didnt queery when writing the cheques as i didnt want a row and i needed to check the figures which i later did."The purpose of Life is to spread and create Happiness" :j0 -
yeah, I agree, you bought by the yard, you didnt agree to buy a roll end. I would say it may be the carpet shop who are at falut rather than the fitter, and often they do not directly employ them.
The phrase you are looking for is 'in full and final settlement'0 -

Forget the carpet for a minute, you were quoted £50-£55 for fitting but you were asked to pay £90 and did.
You didn't need to check those figures, you already knew that was above the price you were, so why hand a cheque over for £90 and then go onto cancel it
Didn't you ask why the price had gone upto £90 from £50 odd?Tank fly boss walk jam nitty gritty...0 -
