It could be worth downloading "laplink gold" you can then connect the 2 laptops and give it a try. It has worked for me in the past, but I can't remember which programme I transferred. This didn't interfere with registrys on either.
This is an open forum, anyone can post and I just did !

It won't work for installed programs. If it could then there'd be no difference in just using a pen drive to transfer the appropriate files. There may be the occasional exe that is a standalone executable that can be loaded but there's not many of those and MS Picture It if I remember correctly completely integrates itself into the registry etc. So not "interfering" with the registries means by definition it couldn't be transferred across because parts of the program are in the registry.

It maybe possible using the following program:
"Libertà is an infrastructure for supporting Portable Applications. It includes programs to copy your settings around, back files up and make existing programs portable, i.e. redirect their registry entries."
    http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=165216

I've no idea if it will work, but fingers crossed it will :)

Most of these programs are snake oil and make false promises. Some (usually smaller) programs will survive a transfer, but always, always be wary of meddling with the registry. The only way to guarantee full compatibility is to re-install the program from scratch.

That's not my findings at all, I've previously used:

COA32 and WinXP Move for moving programs from on location to another. The OP wanted to move their chosen program to memory stick, there's no reason why she shouldn't be able to run the program from a memory stick. The above application was sugested on the portableapps.com website as being able to achieve this ends, as a website that specialises in creating and moving applications to memory stick I can't see why it would be sugested if it was anything other than legitimate.

True however, the windows registry isn't something to be messed with generally, but if you take precautions before hand as you say creating a save partition, or have a drive backup anyway: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/322756 then there shouldn't be any problem. Though thinking about it, I should have mentioned such things in my original posting alongside the program I sugested.
It could have been worse. At least source code's not combustible, or you can bet somebody at McAfee would have lit it.
