Great thread with a happy ending! Reminds me of a story my mum told me of when she was little and had a hamster (in the 1940's) and her mum (my nan of course) bought her a hamster, but hamster knowledge was very limited in those days and nan came in one day to see hammy with it's cheeks full.

So she promptly grabbed hammy and fished all the food out cos she thought it was choking to death!

I doubt the poor bugg3r lived long if she did it every time she noticed it happening!!! She said she thought there was summit wrong with it!!!

Silly nan! We still rib her about it now!!!

I had hamsters as a child but they all seemed to die of 'wet tail'? (if there is such a thing?) That's what mum said anyway - but after the nan stories I daren't imagine what actually happened to my hamsters!!! :rotfl:

Yeah one of my hamsters died of wet tail (I was 8 so didn't know) It was a brand new hamster too, and it's backend was just soggy, died 5day later. I was distraught. Think rabbits can get it too? Not sure what causes it though

Aww naughty hammie! Mine escaped and was happily digging her way through the kitchen wall to our neighbours' by the time I arrived home one evening. I enjoyed spending the hour preceeding our reunion crawling around on my knees hunting for her. Not!

loving the hamster stories and glad the missing one was found:D

my brother had a hamster called speedy who was an escape artist- he could open his cage door if you didn't put the catch on the double lock and that was at the top of the cage so he was always upside down trying to escape:rotfl:

my auntie lost him while looking after him while the family where on holiday. but found him later.

he escaped in their house & chewed a hole under their sofa lining and must have spent all night moving his bed from the cage to his new 'home' in the leather sofa:rotfl:

Yes 'wet tail' is a very real and very common condition, tends to be brought on by stress, very similar to flu in us mortals (i.e. always happens when we are rundown etc...) basically it's the runs, hamsters can get dehydrated very quickly and it can be fatal, if caught early it can be treated with antibiotics by the vets. Is prob more common when they first get home... the stress of leaving thier mum, off to a pet shop, then on to thier new home, no wonder thier immune systems are low really :( It's contagious between other hamsters too, so it's important if you have more than one, or you are replacing one that cages and hands are disinfected :T Gerbils can also be affected but less common than hamsters. It doesn't to my knowledge affect rabbits though, although they can also suffer from the runs which can cause other problems like flystrike and dehydration!
  • Awww yay for finding the hamster =]
Glad to hear he's back safe + sound.
I'll never forget the first night I had my snake and the !!!!!! escaped =|

This reminded me of all the times our hamsters went missing, but also of one particular time when one got under the floorboards (don't ask me how I don't remember) All I remember is holding a t spoon under the floor with baked beans on a luring him out like that, lol.
