Just to let you all know, Russell has been found safe and sound in the bathroom, with his cheeks full!!! After preparing my son for the fact that Russell was missing, my eldest son spotted him in the bathroom as soon as we got home! After emptying his pouch in his cage, he must have found a chocolate cookie underneath my sons bed!
Thanks for all your help.

Phew! Panic over. What a great thread. Reminded me of Hamster escapes in our family. The worst one was when a Hamster was heard rustling inside the chimney, and bricks had to be removed to get him out - a little sooty but none the worse for his adventure! Im glad Russell was found safe and sound.Don't pay off your student loan quicker than you have to.0

Hooray!
So glad he has been found!
Reminded me of when one of our hamsters did a runner. I could hear him gnawing in the wall cavity in the kitchen, he must have got behind a kitchen cupboard somehow and got up into the wall space, i was terrified he would die up there and would stink the house out! He was gone for 2 days, then I spotted him run across the kitchen one evening while we were eating tea! He was so thirsty, and gulped down a load of water, wasnt bothered about food so he had probably been chewing the cavity wall insulation!0 -
When I was a child my hamster, whose cage was in our living room
(), got out one night and chewed a hole in the carpet trying to burrow under a door (my parents have concrete floors :rotfl: ) stood on the bars of an electric fire and bent them and chewed the wires to the fire, chewed the bottom of some floor length curtains and several LP covers.
When we discovered the damage I was in floods of tears sobbing that she might be dead whereas my father was incandescent with rage and said if it wasn't dead already it would be when he got his hands on it. For some reason he didn't find it as cute as I did that she had got back into her cage and gone to sleep after her night time adventures
However, when we looked after the Cubs hamster it got out on the first night and was found stiff as a board in our garage 4 months later, having chewed it's way though our gazebo!! Was rather red-faced admitting that one to Arkela!0 -
One of my mates had a syrian that got out and we all thought the worst.
Over a year later he turned up and was found sitting on her bed! We were rather shocked to say the least..Green and White Barmy Army!0 -

A useful tip to remember for times like these - buy or make a humane mouse trap. The ones you can buy are basically a tube or little box thingy which you put some food in, the escaped hamster, mouse or gerbil runs in to eat the food and a door closes behind it. Then in the morning you can transfer the pet back to its home. The best kind of food to use is something strong smelling or their favourite treat as this will attract them.
Or as others have said use a bucket, or a box (not cardboard - they will chew through!) and make sure they can get in but not out. A soft landing is a must though if you are using a box! Ways to get them in but not out: staircase of books, bricks, DVD cases... a ladder taken from their cage. Google "humane mouse trap" for more ideas.I don't believe and I never did that two wrongs make a right0
