Could you buy one of these little one-ringed portable gas burners which operate on tinned gas canisters? You can buy them in hardware shops, camping stores, etc. and they cost around £15. We have one which we use outside in the garden and they're surprisingly economical to use in terms of gas. There's a surprising number of meals you can cook in one saucepan/frying pan if you're a little ingenuous.0

miserly mum- i'll ask the council about that tomorrow thanks x
My experience with workmen (oooo errrr missus) is to leave out a few biccies and tell them to help themselves to tea etc. It's amazing how much you go up in their estimation if you do this

Ok I had a rewire and new kitchen about 18 months ago, I'll share what happened.
My re-wire was done in bits by BF's uncle. The power doesn't need to be off all the time. I would also imagine that if you left the kettle on the same extension as fridge and freezer, council workman wouldn't see it without power for long! As said above bribe them, provide biscuits etc. Your freezer should be fine as long as it isn't off for more than 4/6 hours at a time.
We camped in the living room with a microwave and a george foreman. I had a load of ready meals in my freezer.(It was pre my old style light bulb moment) Tins of soup, beans etc were also important. I had no sink for nearly 3 weeks, and I relied on paper plates / bowls from my local pound shop. Washing up in my bathroom was not fun!Money, money, money, must be funny....in a rich mans world.

Don't let them use your leccy ! The price the contractors are charging the council they should all be using gold plated rechargeable wotsits !
What else? Oh yeah ............
Lots of OAP's who started smoking when they were fighting WW2 as they were told it was good for their nerves will have to stand in their gardens in the piddling rain if they want a fag as they're not allowed to smoke when workmen are in their home ! or if no garden I guess they'll have to stand in the street grrrrr.....................I'm smiling because I have no idea what's going on ...:)

When the council here did that they set people up with a kitchen in another room.. I'd ask about it.. if you have children that NORMALLY live with you they are not permitted to leave you without a kitchen..
