Just found this site/forum. Have been living rural for 3 years now, although i was living for 10 years in rural Herefordshire. Must say the best way to save money is not just to get to know your neighbours but get to the pubs note pubs not pub. I have saved fair bit on pigs, pheasant (virtually free) etc. Speak to everyone you meet when you go out walking/cycling. I get apples form a farmer I met who had a couple of apple trees in his hedge with other people i scrounged off from I now have 14 gallons cider brewed. I could go on but the things is to talk to people.....whether they want to or not!!!!!!! JB

Completely agree about communication and neighbours, good ones are a must when they are few and/or far between. Chatting to anyone who is within earshot usually results in finding out who has what and what groups operate within your area. (LETS has been great for me! I've traded so much over the past year or so and then there's the social aspect of the get togethers.) It always amazes me when people in towns can live on the same street for years and never know their neighbours. It's just plain anti-social to me.

If only we had one !!! Nearest pub is miles away ! We used to have 3 in the next village but they all closed one by one...
We are having summer at last. This is the third day of sunshine and warm, which means summer in Scotland is nearly over LOL! My tatties have appeared, and the kale is now a couple of inches high and looks like kale instead of weeds. The lilac is starting to get leaves and the garden is full of forget-me-nots. Lovely blue. I hope all of my fellow peasants are having the same nice weather :)

We're not getting the summer weather in the southwest, it's damp and grey here again, despite what the national weather forecasts are saying. Maybe it'll brighten up soon. I need my seedlings planted out, the grass will need cutting soon and we still have storage heaters on indoors. NOT very moneysaving, although they have been switched to low, but it meant lighting the fire when it was really frosty last week.

O thats a pity xxx I hate it when everybody is raving about nice weather and we're sat up here in grey gloom. The mornings start off grey here but it breaks away early - although today it looks a wee bit hazy .
I just noticed my beech hedge is starting to turn green at last.

For those that haven't tried freecycle. It is specially good in rural areas. You wouldn't believe the stuff people give away and it is away of getting rid of your own stuff that you no longer have a need for. I got some plant pots the other day, well to be more precise 4 bin bags full. I had to cycle back and forward with my bicycle trailer to get them all home. Now I have lots of gardening friends in the village and they have lots of spare plant pots!!! I should mention that freecycle is Internet site for giving things away, you find you local group or groups and join. Once you have given away something you can then apply for goods that people are giving away and put your own wants on the forum. Well worth looking into. Of course it may involve a bit more traveling in rural areas, a bit of a !!!!!! on a bicycle but well worth it. JB

I've had 2 things from Freecycle and both were brilliant. One fabulous Singer sewing maching and one Kenwood jug blender. Both were not far away, about 10/12 miles. Great idea !
Can I ask if anybody knows how tall the 47kg calor cylinder is ? I might change to that size to save my poor OH work, but I need to know if the hose will reach.

It's less than 5 foot high. We used to use 3 at a time for our central heating and I remember being taller than them.
