Well, we are having very uneven results. One cylinder lasted almost 3 months, and the next lasted a month! The current one we thought had run out last night after only 3 weeks - but it turned out to be a mysterious loss of pressure which sorted itself. Is a mystery :D

What size are those tall thin red propane cylinders?
How much are they to refill?

If you go to the Calor website they have all the sizes and prices on there. We use the 19kg size, it's tall and thin and it costs about £25 delivered. But there's a taller really big one as well I think.

I think this is what I was thinking of:

    47 KG Propane Refill

    Product Information
Suitable for home heating and cooking. Call for trade discounts on orders of 5 units or more.
    Price: 49.95

That's better value yes. The husband says he couldn't lift it though and he has to carry it through the house to the back. Also that size he says has to be chained to the wall because we get terrific winds here :) But it is better value so I'm thinking how to do it...:)

My actual interest is the market created by last week's official announcement about FiT (Feed in Tariffs) from this April & (coming this time next year) RHI (Renewable Heat Initiative).

It seems that some people use that large red cylinders for heating as well as cooking.

The message seems to be "If you have a south facing unshaded roof, act now to cover it with Solar PV and get 20-25 years of negative electricity bills???????!!!
(or live on the top of a SW facing cliff or have a handy waterfall)
You have already missed the first move by the band-wagon.

If you are thinking of installing wood fired heating - heat pumps - hot water roof panels; then keep you ear to the ground for last minute changes.

Well, the Aga has been turned off and we are only having a small wood fire each evening now. We got through about 1300 litres of oil, or £540 worth. Back to the old red gas cylinder + electric for cooking.:(

 I think oil is very expensive to run. Agas look awesome but I think they gobble fuel.. at least we get the summer to re-group and re-assess!

Yes, it's like running another car. If it was only the Aga, that would be OK, but then there's still the electric, and logs are another £90 a month, although I haven't used all of those and now have a pile for next year. In total, fuel is costing us about £300 a month from mid November to late April.

Still, we shall be rebuilding this house in a couple of years, and then we'll be looking at all the heating options. My father in law wants us to expand the place a lot, but that's old school thinking. I just want it to be comfy and efficient. :)
