There are a few threads floating around which discuss ways to convert unwanted mobile phone credit into cash by using cashback sites - take a look here:
http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showthread.html?t=708205
The most popular ones are Jamster (£4.37 Quidco cashback for £4.50 "outlay") and Splash Plastic (£10 Quidco cashback for £5 "outlay"). These both work on the same principle of charging you by reverse-charged premium SMS (but they actually cost marginally more than the quoted costs as you also have to pay for the initial outgoing text message - maybe 10p/50p).
Also, if you don't already have a Quidco account you'll have to factor in the £5 annual fee cost. You could go through Topcashback to get £4.27 Jamster cashback (and no annual fee) but I don't think they do Splash Plastic.
