A+L Isa Delays?/Opening 2 ISAs in 1 tax year

The OH applied to open an A+L cash Isa just over3 weeks ago. Got asked for ID, that was sent back 2.5 weeks ago. They are saying there are delays processing applications. This is for the 2007/2008 allowance so if they don't moving it may be too late to pay in the 3k. Can the OH apply to open another account if it gets too late? I know when I first opened my NSandI I paid by debit card at the point of opening.

So, in conclusion, is anyone else experiencing delays?
Is it possible to apply for 2 accounts on the same tax year?

I applied for 2 Alliance and Leicester ISAs, one for me, one for my wife. I received email confirmation that the accounts were open within an hour.

The internet banking ID letters arrived two days later and the PINs the next day so I'd chase them up if I were you!

I applied for issue 4 direct isa the weekend that it launched. I was accepted by return email and told that my registration details and 'online banking' particulars would follow by post.

A few days later I received two letters from A&L; one to confirm that the isa had been opened and one to inform me that the account did not qualify for online administration. Hmm, a phone call later I receive an apology and assurance that I'll get the online banking details in a few days.

One week later nothing had arrived.

Another phone call 'Terribly sorry Sir,, don't kow what happened there, I'll get it sent out again'.

Yep, you've guessed it - TWO weeks later and no show. ANOTHER phone call 'Terribly sorry, blah, blah, blah,.... I'll set it up for you now and you'll get the details in a few days'. I had an interesting time telling the chap that after being told this twice already that I didn't believe him. No he couldn't let me escalate, no he couldn't tell me what had gone wrong the first and second times, no I couldn't speak to customer services 'I can only send them a letter',..Hmm....

A couple of days later I received the details and could access my account, I immediately transfered my £3k in - £3k incidently that had been moved from a 'high interest' account to a 'no interest' account in preparation the day A&L confirmed by email that the ISA was open.

So, three half-hour-hold phone calls, 9th of Feb to the 11th of March before I could pay my £3k in, loss of a months interest (twice) and 'no I can't speak to customer services'.

I selected A&L because they were the deal of the moment, importantly could be administered online and also because I have a few shares but boy they don't exactly instill confidence do they?

Keep on their backs about this is I were you. Youd be surprised what can be done if you jump up and down a little and mention the word complaint!

As long as you sent in your application form prior to the deadline (5 April) then you will be able to catch 07/08 tax year. If you experience further delays you can contact HMRC (previously Inland Revenue) for more details on what you do and just as a failsafe to make sure your investment completes on time
