Economy 7 or Economy 10

Options
We're about to change our existing storage heaters as they are at least 13 years old & have found a website advertising radiator like heaters which sound perfect!!, no more ugly heaters!!, they say that these radiators are more cost efficient than storage heaters, so say I put the heaters on at 5.30 to 8am in the morning & then again at night 4-6 or say 9 I'm hoping that is about right???? again not really gone into this yet but I am hoping they are cheaper cos I would love to get rid of the old storage heaters!! oh I should have said we don't can't have gas & its a 3 bed semi!! with a family of 4 2 kids!!. Right OK they are run on a thermostat so I can set the timer to what ever I choose. I then found on a different site when searching for heaters, that the Econmomy 10 tarriff is the one to go for?? the heaters are from economy radiator com. Can someone pls advise am I doing the right thing here in changing to these radiators?? & what about economy 10 is that the best tarrif for me & are they cost affective ie cheaper, Oh what happens to my existing boiler?? which is on consent immersian!, my monthly elec bills at the mo are £120 a month, bearing in mind we do not have gas, working 4 heaters, underfloor heating & washing machine & dishwasher.

Any info is much appreicated!!

Interesting, but I'm sure someone will be along any minute to tell you how all electric heating systems are 100% efficient, so you'll use the same number of units whether you use these radiators or your current storage heaters to get the same heat.

Anyway I think it'll depend on the price you pay for your storage heaters just now (I assume you're on economy 7 for this) versus the price you'd be paying to run these heaters when you require them and I'd imagine for these type of heaters you would be better on economy 10.

I assume you have your boiler at present for hot water - I'd imagine you need to keep it for hot water as from what I read these type of radiator heaters ( http://www.economy-radiator.com/ ) are totally independent. Do you really need it on constant immersion though? Surely an hour in the morning and evening should be sufficient, though obviously it depends on your hot water usage.

    HTH.
  • Thanks very much for this info!! appreiciated!!

Yes we are currently on E7, however the E10 i've only just come across not contacted the provider on this just read it from posts on here regarding other items.

Yes we would still need the boiler, so I take it this would need to be re-wired ?? I have no idea about this at all & really don't know what I am talking about here so please excuse me!!!, so would this have to be re-wired or something??? & you're quite right we probably don't need it on constantly but again can this be timer controlled or would we hve to manually put this on in the morning & night?? if we had to do it manually out the Immersion on then especially in the morning then we would probably end up having cold showers!!!!

Also I've just thought we have underfloor heating in our conservatory which is on constantly at 25 throughout the winter, I take as we are on E7 we are using alot of electric in the day at the more expensive rate, so if we did go on E10 would this make this cheaper again!!???

Thanks ever so much for your advise!!

If you change from Storage Heating to these new systems that run on daytime electricity you will be making huge mistake in money saving terms.

Absolutely no point in going over the grounds again as if you do a search on this part of the forum you will find scores of posts on the subject.

    Hello MrsEv,

the first thing I would personally recommend is that you look at whether or not E10 is available at the moment in your area as I believe it is still not freely available everywhere.

Providing that you are able to get E10 check that this tariff allows ALL electricity used during the cheap rate periods to be at cheap rate. I spoke on behalf of a client to an EON representative who (after confirming with her supervisor) stated that they would only allow the off peak board to be switched during the 2no Daytime rates.

Assuming you can switch to the correct E10 tariff go get yourself a lot of budget plug in timers and start setting up all your energy hungry equipment (Washing machine, Tumble dryer, Standard heating, Immersion heater) to operate primarily during these time frames.
The same goes for The underfloor (use the cheaper rates to bring the temperature upto correct degrees.

If you are really disciplined and can slightly alter your eating habits heat the Oven and cooker up during these periods as well then you can address your heating requirements

Hello again so soon, I just noticed a major cost in your posting

25 is pretty hot for a room not least a room that may have the largest heat loss in your house. If you need it at 25 to feel the heat I would buy/hire/borrow a digital room thermometer and check that the room stat is actually calibrated correctly (I am guessing that it is not). Most people would find 21 to be a maximum and in most cases a TRUE temperature of 18 - 19 would be sufficiently comfortable.

As I've found out E10 is only available in certain "supply regions" (i.e. the regions before you could buy your leccy from any company.

Also if it IS available in your region, you may have trouble finding someone to supply it (not on ny comparrison sites you will note).

Is available in my area (Norweb) but the ONLY company I can find willing to supply is Scottish & Southern group

E10 unit prices are slightly more than E7 from what I have seen.
 I have a poll / discussion on Economy 7 / 10 off-peak usage (as a % or total) and ways to improve it but I'm not allowed to link to it so have a look on the gas/elec forum if you would like to vote or discuss.
