It normally means the brake light switch is broke. This is normally to be found behind the brake pedal but unless you have a Haynes manual it's probably easier to take it to some back street garage

look under the dash at the pedal, you will see the switch, turn it to release it then push it in and turn it the other way to lock it back in

dont press it too hard so it moves the pedal, just enough so the switch closes when its in

it a 10 second job tops

not trying to be irritating here, but are you sure it's not the fog lights on by mistake?

    Is it a Peugeot 206?

This happened on my old one and a girl at work had it on her 206 CC.

When driving I had to pull the pedal with my foot under it a little to release the broken contact.

Mine was fixed under warranty then the next day normal service was resumed with tailgaters.

Brake lights constantly on sure keeps people back, especially the 3rd high level light!

this is avery common fault on 206's you see them up and down the motorway with the brake lights on all the time.
i had a ford transit connect, this fault happened on it,i just bent the plate on the brake pedal that actuates the switch up a bit more to keep the switch closed with a hammer.
    done in 5 mins.
