I went in a charity shop this week to buy a few old hats for role play for the children in my class and the cheapest was £7.50 - much, much cheaper to buy new from elsewhere.0

FloFlo, don't know if you already have some but Poundland have had them (for making easter bonnets) for a few weeks now0 -
Hi, Martin’s asked me to post this in these circumstances: I’ve asked Board Guides to move threads if they’ll receive a better response elsewhere (please see this rule) so this post/thread has been moved to another board, where it should get more replies. I live in a small town with very limited shops, particularly for womens and childrens clothing and toys. Those we do have are really expensive so the charity shops are a godsend to me not only in price but the fact that from one week to the next I've no idea what will be in there but can guarantee it won't be rack upon rack of clothes that are 'this seasons colour/style' that everyone else will be buying.
And for gifts I find them perfect. I'm building up a store of other peoples unwanted presents in my spare room to put into gift baskets for birthdays and christmas...........saving me a fair bit of money as well as giving to the charity concerned.
Most, if not all our clothes come from charity shops, as do curtains, cushion covers and bedding along with the various nick nacks we have.
It does seem that in some areas they can be more expensive -I''ve noticed this when we;'ve been on holiday, and the various charity shops can differ in price.............some very cheap, some a bit on the pricey side .............but as I say, I support them on a regular basis, not only for the bargains but because its a lot more fun at least for me, than going around the bigger storesMary
I'm creative -you can't expect me to be neat too !

I agree that Oxfam in usually overpriced. I've seen skanky garments in there with a £4.50 price tag.
However as someone said earlier, a lot of the old gals working in these stores haven't the foggiest what things are worth. I don't object to paying a few quid for something new and decent. I wouldn't pay more than £1 for a worn item tho! They are trying to raise money for charity at the end of the day. If they can get a decent price for something-good for them.
A lot of people raid charity shops for stuff to sell on Ebay. Why shouldn't the charity shop make a few quid too?
Thanks OP for the top tip. I will be popping to my local Barnados! (Is it all Barnados or just big ones do you know?)

Its probably just the nearest shops to the Next who gave the donation. Its not cost effective to distribute the stock round. Not been here in years! Hi everyone. Make £10 a day challenge = £78.45/1550

I used to work in an Oxfam shop. They are run like businesses and the staff are given price lists to work from. Sometimes the best stuff gets "transferred" to other shops never to be seen again.0

If the charity can raise more money because Chris25 told them they had under priced something then thats a great thing. Its about the charity first and foremost.
There should be no such thing as "under priced", it was GIVEN TO THEM, therefore, the money made is profit for the charity. For personal reasons i given to cancer charities directly but i draw the line at some of these prices in shops, Charity is no excuse for greed.A happy wife, and mum to 2 lovely little boys :j0 -
If a charity gets given £10 instead of £5 for something how is that greed? Every little bit of money makes a huge difference to charities. Yes, its all profit but if you can get £10 instead of £5 how is it greedy? Not been here in years! Hi everyone. Make £10 a day challenge = £78.45/1550

because the very people who cant afford £10 on an item are generally the ones who shop there. the charity works both ways. The amount of women with children i see looking at toys and comment how they cant even afford £3 is very upsetting. I always advise them to go to boot sales where you get genuine people who want to sell unwanted/unused items. i have bought beautiful clothes for my son in the past for between 10p-£1 per bit and they have been baby gap or john rocha, they know how dear it is with children and that is for their personal gain so yes, i stand by my comments and experience and according to some replies on here i am not alone.A happy wife, and mum to 2 lovely little boys :j0
