St Barnados Chairty Shops - bargains (children/baby clothes)

Went to my local St Barnodos today and they had a basket full of childrens clothes, all the stuff is brand new but they cut the labels. They have 2 large store suppliers, I think Boots mini mode (give away label!) and Next.

I have bought my daughter, some beautiful new outfits for the summer including t-shirts, trousers swimming outfits etc. All at 58p each.

Spoke to the lady and she said every 2-3 days they put out new stuff that has been donated by these stores. I felt a bit bad at taking these beautiful clothes for such little money that I made a donation.

Could be worth a trip if kids need new clothing, its a nationwide thing she said.

Lots of charities are given new clothing by big shops. I work for a hospice charity and we are given stock regularly by stores such as Next

Its always worth going in to have a look

if the charity shops were given new stock they would still be too expensive to buy. my mum goes to one which is reasonably priced, it makes more money than the others as its turnover is quick and is always full of cutomers. unfortunately my experience is different. the ones near me are becoming dearer and dearer and quite frankly, greedy. i have in the last 2 week seen at least 3 toys that i have seen cheaper in tesco and argos sales, yet these are second hand and not too pretty ! this i why alot of shop have signs up saying they can not take any more donations. if they charged reasonable prices in the first place the shop would have room on rails. people look to charity shops because they cannot afford new (or believe like i do that ones mans trash is anothers treasure) yet are paying,in some cases, shops prices. last week i heard the volunteers discussing whether a skirt should be £3.50 or £4.50, you can get that in m & s sale. if anyone reading this can make prices in your shops more reasonable, please do so. the elderly and childen of this country are missing out on items because of your greed, and remember you were GIVEN the items so any money made is good charitable money !!

i totally agree with you in one of the charity shops there was a really nice toddler tshirt which my little boy loved but it was worn a lot and i looked at the price tag and it was 5 pounds for age 2-3 we dont bother with charity shops that much anymore (p.s it was a tesco make one)

I'll have a look in our local Barnardos - many thanks, but the other person is correct - normally the put outrageous prices on - I rarely look anymore now.

mrsv05 you are so right. I still go to charity shops but rarely buy anything. The high street is often cheaper for clothes and books. I know that it is a competitive market and the charities want to make as much as possible but if the prices were cheaper perhaps more people would visit and make a donation at the same time (I normally do). Personally I would not pay more for an item just because it was from a charity shop.

Anyway thanks to the OP, my friend has a little one that is growing so fast so I will tell her to check it out. The nearest one to me only sells household goods but are very reasonable. I brought a lot of fence stain. These went like hotcakes because they were so reasonably priced at £3.

I agree - this is the case with some charity shops and I could mention two large charities which are the main culprits. Ours are reasonably priced. Prices are quite often just determined by the shop manager, not the actual charity though so where one shop might be expensive, if you go to the next town to a shop in aid of the same charity, items could be priced very differently.

Don't tar them all with the same brush. Some of us know what we are doing and what our customers want

Our local Salvation Army charity shop is very reasonable. Ladies tops and trousers are £1. So whenever I donate items I send them there.

Whilst I agree that the majority of chairty shops are expensive, I did point out that these brand new clothes were actually 58p a piece.

I looked in my local barnardos today and they didn't have ant new clothes. Its a shame, the charity shops in our area are also very expensive.
