Tesco Customer Services says no refund on faulty goods if no receipt!

but they have no evidence to the contrary - and you have evidence that you bought it there. It's not like the op is after a refund (which shops don't have to do nor should do without a receipt because of potential theft issues). I'd stick to your guns and write to them.0

I know you've found a link suggesting a witness is ok but sometimes even sites like that can get their information wrong.
All it would take is 2 shoplifters to take advantage of that. So I very doubt it's correct.

I would have never have accepted that as it's blatently easy to abuse. With that fact I don't think they could have done much either.
The only powers Trading Standards have is what is written in the law. The law requires proof of purchase but doesn't define that. A witness could be in on an act of crime so a witness isn't conclusive proof such as something printed.
I think they've made that as a suggestion without realising it's flaws. The websites text is obviously copy and pasted.0 -
last year i bought a 32 inch tv from tescos and of course after having it just 5 mths it went faulty , i couldnt find the receipt and myself and tesco went to war i said a tv lasts longer than 5 mths they said wheres your receipt i asked them to look at my clubcard because the proff would be there alas club card info only goes back 3 mths , in the end tesco gave me £40 back they said this was the current value of the tv , i felt silly for losing the receipt but i bet it will turn up soon
the tv did cost £239 to begin with so i would say keep on at them they may offer a replacment or they may did their heels in.GOOD LUCK

tagz, if I were you I'd contact either your local TS dept or consumer direct for advice. It does seem from posts on here that whether or not you get satisfaction depends upon which individual serves you that day, rather than Tesco adhering to trading laws.
If it's any help, I purchased a suitcase from Tesco, own brand. It didn't even last for one short journey so I returned it - minus receipt. As it was too early for my credit card bill, they checked it against my clubcard and I got a full refund, no problem. They did say that my credit card evidence would have been fine - seems staff at my Tesco know the law!:D0 -
So should I believe all the UK Trading Standards offices, or what you think that you have picked up in passing. Um that's a hard one.
It's up to you but a so called witness isn't proof. The sog act requires proof and lists written forms of proof and has no mention that a witness will do.

Showing someone witnessed something is different to them saying they witnessed something!0
