We've Got Mice-Help!!! (merged threads)

We bought a humane trap, which the mouse filled with shredded paper and used as a nest!
I thought that was so clever that he was reprieved, and I've just spent 10 minutes with a cup of tea watching him eat mint leaves (mice are clearly scrupulous about fresh breath).
Fortunately, he lives in a former coal store, and not in my kitchen, so we can co-exist, and I'm hopelessly soppy about killing things.0 -
thanks all for your responses - and thanks for the link to the other thread, I'd checked the index but must have missed it.
The smell of our cat doesn't seem to have scared away the mouse. If we wanted the cat to catch it we'd have to leave the kitchen cupboard open - leaving the whole flat accessible to the mouse!
I'll persevere with the humane traps for another day or so but then will consider more drastic measures.0 -
Hi RiffRaff,
I have merged your thread into another on mice as it helps to keep all the replies and suggestions on one thread. As always, the posts are listed in date order so you'll have to read from the beginning to see all the replies.

Hi all,
Just wanted to say thanks for your tips - the mouse was finally caught overnight in a humane trap, using sultanas as bait. Before that she'd managed to get chocolate, cheese and sultanas out of the trap without being caught, so it's a relief! I set her free in the local country park on my way to work this morning, should be far enough from my house that she doesn't come back again! Will leave the traps out for a couple of days to search for more evidence of mice but hopefully there won't be any!

Hi All,
Now I'm used to rodents etc, I used to have 2 pet rats and now have 2 gerbils. But strange things are afoot! The last few nights I've been hearing noises (we live in a terrace road, but either side is empty), and my OH told me I was hearing things.
But last night at 2.30am, there was a defiante gnawing!! I thought it was coming from my chest of draws and I made him get the torch out. No sign of it tho. No visible droppings or gnaw marks. My daughter said she could hear it too and it sounded like it was coming from my room.
So after some hunting and tidying of cupboards etc today, I'm still non the wiser. OH thinks it's come through the wall cavity from one of the other houses and is now under the floor boards upstairs.
Right - so any ideas on what I can do to get rid of it. I used to have a sonic thing that had a setting for insects and mice - normally kept on the insects, but it's broke and I can't use anything like that or my gerbils will be very upset!!
Plus as we think it's under the floor, we can't put traps down unless we pull the carpet up and some floor boards.
Any ideas on this one? I'm a light sleeper, and OOHHHHH I need my beauty sleep.
Thanks Laura0 -
Where?
There on the Stair!
A little mouse with clogs on, well I declare.....
I am sooooo sorry - I love that song when I was little.
And as much as I love rats and mice, Wild ones are vermin, so its a trap or poison if the sonic thing is out.0 -
Yikes! Sorry, I don't have any suggestions, but it reminded me of when I was about 10 or 11 and kept hearing the same.
My parents didn't believe me and I was terrifired (I have a phobia of rats - esp the thought of them nibbling my toes in the night. Unlikely I know - but that's phobia's for you, totally irational) Anyway, eventually one night they got up when I screemed and launched a brush at the door (where the sound was coming from) quick enough to see it run across the landing. We then found that the little darling (mouse not rat) had been chewing the carpet at my door frame. We eventually had to get rentakill in to get rid of it and I was given another lecture about the importance of emptying my lunch box when I got home ......... ***Blush***

Mice hate peppermint:eek: ! I was told this by a man from the council who was going to take three weeks to get out to deal with my rodent problem. I was a bit sceptical but did as he said and sprinkled peppermint oil ( you get it really cheap from the chemist) all over where I thought they were and it worked. No more mice. Good luck:rotfl::snow_laug HM Christmas 2010

We occasionally get a mouse in our loft. They get in under the foundations of the house and climb up the cavity wall, then find themselves trapped with nothing to eat but rafters and christmas decorations. We tried humane traps with no success and had to resort to traditional traps, which I hate. I think mice are rather sweet little things. They find chocolate and peanut butter irresistable if that's any help? Perhaps you could lure him out.Official DFW Nerd No 096 - Proud to have dealt with my debt!0

hi, ooooh i remember that noise so so well!! its the worse thing when your trying to sleep. It sounds like they are running in between the walls, possible they are coming in and out somewhere prob somewhere near the kitchen (in my experience of having mice everywhere i live!!) personally i found traps a nightmare a) i dont like checking them and b) mice wise up to them......I always used the poisen that you can buy from any hardware store it comes with trays, leave them hidden perhaps in the corner of the bedroom and in the kitchen, they go off and die outside, and you will see the grains moved if they have been there........dont wait for them to breed!!!! good luck0
