Premium Bond Winner ?

  • I now have 200 blocks of premium bonds and have £23025 invested. I just wondered how many blocks do other people have and how many times have you won on £100 ones or lower? I have won 4 times so far and had mine since 2017
I have 90 blocks in total, bought or won over the last three years. About 75% of these are low value blocks (£25-100), 20% are medium value (£100-1000) and 5% are high value (thousands/tens of thousands). I’ve won 30 prizes in total, all on medium or high value blocks. Until March when I won a prize from a £25 block. Then this month I was surprised to win another prize from the same block as in March. Each £25 block is expected to produce a prize every 115 years, so to win two prizes in three months from the same block must be very unlikely.

So yeah, it’s just luck. Each individual £1 bond has the same chance of winning a prize, so obviously the only thing that matters is your total investment and not the number/size of the different blocks.

I remember reading that around 10,000 people per draw just pick numbers 1 to 6. If they ever do come up the payout will be disappointing.
A few months ago there was drama in South Africa cause the numbers 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 and 10 were drawn and 20 different tickets won. So it does happen :)

in between selling and buying a house in 2016-17 i had £50k sitting around for a year so bought a block of premium bonds to that value.

i won a prize every month apart from 2. first month i won 5x £25 prizes. largest individual prize was £100. total won in the 12 months was £650 total so roughly 1.25% return. worthwhile for the investment? No. worthwhile for the enjoyment of being in the draw every month and possibly winning a larger prize? Definitely.

Horses for courses - the average luck return on PBs is currently higher than that available from savings accounts, whereas this probably wouldn't have been the case in 2016/17, so the relative merits of alternative options do change over time, and someone needing a home for £50K for a year now is unlikely to beat the average PB return via other products....

before PB, I had parked my money in a Kent reliance savings account getting 1.5% guaranteed. So it is what ever is the highest at the time for me for my emergency savings, which will never be invested in funds for obvious reasons, even if I run the risk of inflation eroding it away.

Worst case scenario, invested today, tomorrow drop 20% and needs money for an emergency, then that would be a bad decision

No big win for me this month - my county was listed a few times for once so started to get excited! Fingers crossed for a smaller win tomorrow...

They usually go up at about 11.30pm the night before they say they're going to be released, so us impatient people dont have to wait until the morning!

You can rest assured that there is no special prize allocation for any given county. Sorry to dash your enthusiasm. If luck will have it, you might be amongst the 3,079,301 winners in the May draw.
