Buying a new car - free insurance deals?

Hi,

My husband just passed his driving test in February and we are keen for him to start putting his licence to use! Although I don't drive, I have a 1997 Ford Fiesta which we planned to use. However, due to his age (he is 22) the insurance quotes have been around £1100 - £1300 3rd party only, even though the car isn't even worth this.

I came across a site called Young Marmalade which offers a package of purchasing a car, and very cheap, or even free fully comp insurance. The only problem is the APR is quite high (around 11 - 13% depending on the specific deal).

Then I thought about buying the car from a dealer, where the APR is lower, and hopefully getting free insurance included. I know that there are deals with one or two years free insurance, but having searched the internet all day I can't find any! How does one go about getting these deals? Do I have to ask the dealer?

Just incase it's important, we are looking at a Peugeot 207 either new, or nearly new.

Thanks in advance!

  • No such thing as a free lunch. The price of the insurance will be more than covered in the price of the car.

The cost of insurance is often more than the value of the car insured because you can still drive into 5 Rolls Royces in the rustiest shed on the road.

Thank you, I know they'll probably add in the cost somehow but overall if I can find a deal like this it will work out quite well.

Does anyone know anywhere offering these deals or how to get them?

Wrong time of year really.........March is a reg plate changeover so dealers are usually doing nice amounts of business..........July or August is when they start using incentives to shift stock in readiness for September.

EDIT: Vauxhall are doing it on certain Corsa models.

Any advice that you receive from me is worth exactly what you paid for it. Not a penny more or a penny less.

I think it depends on circumstances. My first car was a new Fiesta which came with 2 years comprehensive insurance, as well as full no-claims discount after the 2 year period. I was 17 at the time and had just passed my test, so I was looking at £1000s for TPFT insurance on any car, let alone fully comp. My extremely conservative estimate was that I saved £4000 on insurance, and I got a new car into the bargain.

Thats one of the reasons we are going to do it too. Even the third party only insurance is very expensive, never mind fully comp! Did you buy from a dealer?

I did get it from a dealer, yes. At the time I passed my test (8 years ago now) Ford had an enormous stock of old-shape Fiestas to get rid of before they brought in the current model. Hence lots and lots of money off, free insurance, 0% finance etc. deals to choose from. I wouldn't be surprised if something similar was to come in in the near future, but it's doubtful you'll get 2 free years unfortunately.

I bought a brand new KA for the same reason back in 2002. I didn't save anything really.

Why doesn't he go as named driver on a policy in your name? I was named driver for a few years with Direct Line - it keeps the cost of insurance reasonable though when you do transfer over to your own name you can't get the cheapest deal because you still need to build a proper no claims but it's still a LOT cheaper than trying to get regular insurance without any NCD.

Or, when I bought my Mini last month, Mini Insure offered me a fabulous rate because my H has full no claims bonus. They were taking me on, insurance in my name with no NCD needed as it's cheaper to new drivers than ones with just one year's NCD (which is what I officially have because of being a named driver until last year) I don't really understand exactly how it works but with just me on the policy it was about £300 for the year which I thought was brilliant considering it didn't matter about NCDs! It just cost a lot more with him on the policy which is why I didn't take it up.

Usually free insurance from dealers is for the over 25s only. I'm 23 with a clean license but that wasn't good enough for Ford so I made them fill my tank and give me free tax for the year!

Unfortunately I haven't passed my test and don't drive so that's not really an option. Fingers crossed I will pass my test soon. The insurance will be slightly cheaper but not by much.

I saw a Ford deal but that was over 25s too. There definately is some deals for under 25s about as my friend got free insurance when she was 22 but I can't find any!
