    I have a crossover cable that i use to FTP stuff to my original xbox, so i know that's not the problem.

    It's not dial up, although it is listed in my network connections as dial-up. I have that listed and the 'Local area connection' which goes to connected when my xbox is connected

    It sounds like you have your xbox connected to your PC via a network cable & your PC is connected to the internet via the USB port.
    That's exactly right, will have a look at the instructions for internet connection sharing
