XBOX Live setup help

Hey,

I've just bought an xbox360 and am trying to set up xbox live, i have never set it up before, never used xbox live and have little knowledge about networks.

I don't have a router, i have an ethernet cable which i plan to just plug into my PC and use a shared connection, but i can't seem to set it up. I've plugged it all in and the xbox sayd connection-wired, IP-confirmed, then says DNS-failed. the xbox.com site is awful, can't find any info there, perhaps one of you lovely people will be able to help me!!

Thanks in advance if you can

Sancho

Edit - I have a PC running XP SP2, and Virgin media broadband

i dont know about useing a router or shared connection coz i just connected it to the modem and the tv.
however i will tell you that when you go through the registration process you will qualify for 1 free month on the gold membership. when you get to the page were you choose membership just choose the silver one. it will then tell you you qualify for the free gold membership. you need to already have a hotmail address and one that isnt already registered on their online forums.
heres a tip as well. when it runs out set up another email address and then go through the process of setting up an xbox live account and create a different gamertag. you will then get another free month. i managed to get 3 free months before they sussed it.

yeah, sorry i dont know about your connecting requirements. doesnt it show how in the instruction booklet?
  • on your pc, click 'start', 'run', enter 'command', then type 'ipconfig/all'. Look for the 'dns servers', then enter these on the connection setup on the xbox.

Still can't get it sorted, rang xbox and the guy couldn't even do it!!

Think the problem i have is that i'm with Virgin and my modem is only USB, so i have one wire in the back going to the USB port on the PC, and one wire going to the DSL splitter thingy. No other ports, the guy kept telling me to plug the xbox into the modem!!!

Will i have to buy a router or something? can anyone advise a good one?

A router would make it a lot easier to setup.

It sounds like you have your xbox connected to your PC via a network cable & your PC is connected to the internet via the USB port.

It may be possible to do using internet connection sharing- here are the instructions to set it up if you have Windows XP

Hopefully that will be of some use.

As said a router would make it easier, and as your PC has a network card (Xbox is connected to this) you have all you need.

Did you connct the Xbox to the pc using a standard network cable (was it the one that was supplied with the Xbox)?

If so, I think you may need to swap it for a crossover cable.

But I agree with the others - a router is much easier, plus you don't have to turn on your PC to use Xbos Live.

I find a router easier to use than have to plug in the ethernet cable when i want to go on Live
