  • The discerning judges have told me they were also very impressed with tazz233's home made burger recipe and have decided to exceptionally award it second prize of a signed copy of Martin's book, Thrifty Ways.

I suppose it depends on which glass you use lol :rotfl:
Thanks very much, your help should put me in the good books with my boyfriends son, well if all goes to plan anyway.

quote=jane77;9664397]Once you buy the basics this is a very very cheap meal I make weekly serves 4-6
    • 1 carrot
    • 500g Minced beef £1.55
    • about 6 "normal sized" spuds maris piper or white (mine were £1 special offer for a bag that lasted 4 meals)
    • 1 table spoon dark soya sauce
    • 2 table spoon ketchup
    • 1 table spoon worchester sauce
    • 2 table spoon plain flour (I use sainsbury value)
    • 1 oxo cube to make 375ml beef stock
    • 1 table spoon tomato puree
    • 1 onion
(you can add peas, leeks whatever)

fry diced onion & carrot for about 2-5 min till soft
add minced beef, cook till brown about 7 mins
add the flour, cook for 2 minnutes
add stock ketchup, puree, soya sauce & worchester sauce. season to taste.
Bring to the boil and simmer for about 25 mins
Meanwhile boil the spuds & mash with milk, butter and blk pepper

Put the meat mixture in an oven proof dish coer with mash potatoes. Pop in the oven for about half an hour.

I have most of these ingrediants in my cupboard so I'll let you all do the maths but I only buy the mince, carot, onion & spuds so it's always a cheap but tasty filling option.[/quote]

when cooked, bash chicken with rolling pin or similar then shred.
mix peanut butter and sweet chilli sauce and add boiling water to thin it (it needs to be able to be poured)
Pour over hot chicken and stir well serve with rice.

I agree with comments made about costings and the fact some recipes haven't been full prices. I spent hours costing stuff under a fiver, oh well good recipes on here though :) x

Thought I would share my meal ideas - no it's not 3 course meals but all cost under a fiver are tasty, nutritious and easy to do. We do most of our shopping at Lidl and got all the ingredients there. If I can remember I will put exact cost. Just had this first meal now, the first time we tried it and was a hit with everyone young and old.
    BBQ Chicken
Fresh Chicken Thighs (8 in there) from Lidl £1.29
Couple of onions 32p for a big bag
Barbeque marinade half price at 39p
Method - 10 mins at most.
Chop onions roughly and place in slow cooker pot
Put chicken in and pour about three quarters or all of sauce on.
Put slow cooker on in morning before work and by the time you get home the chicken will fall off the bone in a rich BBQ sauce as good as anything from the Chinese!! Serve with boiled rice. This chicken can also be marinated in the sauce and cooked in oven but I reccommend slow cookers as a sound investment!!
    Cheesy Roast Gammon
Smoked gammon joint £2.99 at Lidl down from £4.49
    Potatoes
Cheese, flour, milk and butter for Cheese sauce
Veg to serve - brocolli and carrots are good.
    Method 20 - 25 mins -- cooking about 1hr
    Turn oven on to high
Put enough veg / sunflower oil in a roasting tin and place in oven
Peel potatoes and when done put in the hot fat
Place Gammon in large pan and cover with water bring to the boil and simmer for between 45mins - 1 hour periodically checking, basting and turning the spuds
Last 10 mins put the rest of the veg on, make a roux and turn it into cheese sauce by adding it. Remove the Gammon from the pan but do NOT pour the water it's been cooking in away.
Serve everything up and cover the gammon / veg in cheese sauce!!
I know this may not sound like much but this really goes down very well with everyone I have served it to. By boiling the Gammon it does not dry out and is really juicy and succulent and any leftovers make a great sandwich or ploughmans.

    Ham and Veg soup
Reseved liquor from Gammon joint - FREE
An onion - 32p for a big bag
    Couple of carrots - cheap
    (optional) butternut squash
    Handful of frozen peas
(optional) If you have any gammon left chop small
    Method - minute prep
Prepare and cook veg until fairly soft. Place in a blender with the liquor from the gammon joint. Whizz it up until it forms a thick liquid - soup. Add frozen peas and any remaining ham, heat through and season with black pepper if you like. Freezes well, nutritious and tasty.. serve with...
    Cheese and Tomato Garlic Ciabatta
Ciabatta loaf - Italian herb is nice they also do white or brown Lidl 59p
Garlic bulbs as required 3/4 for a whole loaf
    Butter, Cheese, Cherry tomatoes
    Method 20mins all in
    Heat oven
    Slice Ciabatta lengthways
Crush Garlic and mix with enough butter to smother each half length. Place halved tomatoes on top and place in oven for 5 mins
Grate Cheese then remove ciabatta and cover with cheese. Return to oven until the cheese is nicely melted!! Voila Slice and serve.
I thought I would share these to help, if you don't agree or haven't anything nice to say, say it if you must and makes you feel better about yourself. I am just showing that it is possible to feed a whole family well for a good price. Even our kids friends who obviously live on a diet or processed crap and chips like the food we make - so it can be done!! Sorry so long hope it helps someone - took a bloody age to type!!
