Hi all,
I'd like to go for a few walks in the mendips, but google maps doesnt seem to show footpaths.
are there any website that I can download maps showing public footpaths or walks?
I've had a look but cant find any? www.walkingworld.com requires an expensive subscription
Also ordanance survery seem to charge to - there seems to be a bit of a monopoly on footpath maps??!!
Can anyone help?

I use www.walkingbritain.co.uk and www.naturevalley.co.uk
Walking Britain is the best out of these 2.
Hopefully they have some in your area but i have a feeling the sites is quite geared to Yorkshire (lucky for me)I beep for Robins - Beep Beep

Most local authorities and national parks publish leaflets for their promoted walks and nature trails or support third party produced ones. They are usually found in reception areas of their official buildings, libraries and Tourist Information Centres and of course these days on their websites. Start with your own local authority websites and search for 'walks.'
In Derby, for example, our council web page not only details our walks and has them available to download but links to most of the walks sites that cover Derbyshire and the Peak District.Prof planning and public rights of way person. Studies all things tech!0 -

Has anyone used any mapping software? I've thought about buying one, so that I can print off the exact area I need for each walk, but they're scarily expensive.

Define "scarily expensive".
Memory-Map with OS 1:50K for a specific area is about £50. If you want more areas, or more detailed OS (1:25K) then you'll pay more.
It's generally the OS map data that forces the price up.:heartpuls Mrs Marleyboy :heartpuls

If you have a GPS receiver, I have a small (but slowly growing!) website (http://www.walk-with-gps.co.uk) that has free walks that can be uploaded to your GPS. It only has a few walks on it, mainly in Yorkshire and Kent, but there is one walk just across the estuary near Chepstow.0

Have you tried your local Library? I know that the main library in Birmingham where I live have a comprehensive set of OS maps which are lent out.Regards
