This approach is probably the best one.

Although it's completely unlawful as both are named on the tenancy agreement. Each has the right to occupy the property so there's no question of one party "evicting" the other.

    Mortgage-free Glee!
Pay to get the locks changed, give the letting agents another key (say you have lost your existing set and needed an emergency lock change - minor fib but it will give you peace of mind), bag up the offensive flatmates stuff and chuck it out. Advertise for another flatmate and be more careful about your choice!

Phone up the different authorities concerned and explain the situation and agree a payment plan to catch up on the payments.

Take this as a lesson learned. Sometimes we make mistakes with flatmates. I once had a flatmate who (I think) staged a theft in the hope I would claim for the "stolen" items from my contents insurance! The police were the ones that were suspicious - why would her stuff be taken when mine was left intact?
:D Thanks to MSE, I am mortgage free!:D

I would not recommend throwing any of his belongings out.

I would recommend that you call the police and lodge him as a missing person.

I would then call your Letting agent and tell them to tell the next of kin hes vanished

with a bit of luck they will clean the place out and look for someone new to take his place.

Have you got any mates who could move in that you could suggest? After all the LA wont want to be out of pocket and someone whos dissappeared is not that likely to pay the rent? ;)

More than one way to skin the cat :)
 Well aint funny how its the little things in life that mean the most? Not where you live, the car you drive or the price tag on your clothes.
Theres no dollar sign on piece of mind
    This Ive come to know...
So if you agree have a drink with me, raise your glasses for a toast
  • get rid of your flatmate and find a new one. the deposit that the agency is holding is not to cover rent (that you might not want to pay) but to cover any possible damage.
