I'm with talktalk as well, and when they had problems last week, i configured thunderbird to retrieve my mail with no problems at all. I now use this all the time for yahoo and hotmail as well, its quicker and i dont have to sign in any more to their email pages full of ad's.:j Arsenal fru & fru :j0

Yes, Thunderbird is a nearly perfect free client. I stick with Outlook Express however because with T-bird, once you have placed your cursor on the subject line, it marks the email as read, a 'feature' that cannot sensibly be disabled. OE can be set to only mark as read if you actually OPEN the email.0

Presumably you've tried Tools/Options/Advanced/General, then altering the box "Wait X seconds before marking a message as read" ?Move along, nothing to see.0 -
Yes, T-bird cannot differentiate between previewing and viewing: Cursor on subject line = viewing. You can set that timer to a long number of minutes but if you leave your cursor on an inbox email item line and change windows / forget about it, eventually it will mark the item as read. Unlike Outlook Express or MS Office Outlook.0

If you use the Opera browser for the link below you can get a "live.com" e-mail account, it is superb, it is Windows Live. The e-mail account has Pop and Forwarding and dead keen on filtering out junk mail. The account has to be set up with the Opera browser but then can be used with IE.

Note .. Change the country to United Kingdom in the box on the form otherwise you will need a State and Zip code. (USA account)0 -

The link works fine using Firefox as well.
You can also get a live.com address by going straight to https://www.live.com and then clicking on the hotmail link.====0 -

Christ, yeh that is expensive!! Tell me you are paying that much for domain AND hosting?
.co.uk domains are like £6 for 2 years, I use Compila
Anyway back to the topic at hand, yes I use Google Mail (www.gmail.com). All your mail is stored on their servers, you have 6gb of email storage and counting. You can configure Outlook/Thunderbird to download the mail should you so wish for archival purposes. The interface is tidy; you can search all your mail in an instant and there is a mobile phone version of the gmail client to access your mail on the go!
I also highly recommend getting a domain name as other people have mentioned, they are fairly easy to configure, the idea is that any mail sent to your new domain is automatically forwarded to your original email address. If your original email address changes due to a different service etc you can repoint your domain to the new address. You can also set up as many prefix's as you like such as 'home@yourdomain.co.uk', 'work@yourdomain.co.uk', 'info@yourdomain.co.uk' and have those forwarding on to different addresses too.0
