want a new email account not tied to isp

i'm currently with a talktalk email address as it was my last isp, however their service has been down a lot lately and i'd rather be with an independent email provider.

what would be my best choice? hotmail? yahoo? google mail? are there any differences between these ? also i have a mobile on three so if i could access email through it that could be useful, although not essential

I have a inbox.com email as you can access this via your mobile unlike hotmail who make you upgrade and pay for this!

With inbox.com you also get online file storage for free 20GB I think this means you can place files here and access anywhere you have an internet connection.

I have a googlemail account and a gmx account.

Out of the two I prefer gmx - similar features to googlemail but without the privacy issues.

Both Yahoo Mail and Gmail provide mobile versions of email:

- http://mobile.yahoo.com/mail

I personally would be happy to use either service having used both Yahoo Mail and Gmail (non-mobile) email accounts for a few years with very few issues.

One advantage of gmail over Yahoo and hotmail is that it is easier to configure to be used in Outlook Express and Thunderbird

Not exactly what you want but I registered my own domain name even though I don't have a website. So now I have an email address of [EMAIL="myname@atmysite.co.uk"]myname@atmysite.co.uk[/EMAIL] if you see what I mean.

I can forward as many email adresses to that s I want and if I change ISP I dont' have to change my email address. Also if I want I can use different email addresses for different purposes as I can set up as many as I want.

gmail's pretty wonderful, and can be accessed via mobiles using either a web interface, or a dedicated application, which mimics the standard interface wonderfully well.

Significantly, it also appears to have the best spam filter I've ever seen.

One of the web email accounts I have is www.bluebottle.com
This has a response format so you have to allow the emails you want through and you can easily block the ones you dont want. Its very esy to use and there is very little spam

I pay £85 a year to 1and1.

GEt up to 50 alias, virus checking /spam filtering etc..

Yahoo free version is simple to use however does not allow any archiving of your valuable emails back to your computer. You can use PopPeeper with it to get an Outlook-type interface on your desktop though.

Gmail allows archiving, synchronizing, with POP and IMAP and it can simulate any POP account you have for sending, all the gizmos but it is more complex.

Pity none of the free email suppliers offer a secure way of logging on in Internet Cafes - eg only request certain characters of a long password, or supply once-only login tokens.
