Well, the movie is now in one piece but I still have a problem

The video part is running very jumpy, and is a bit out of sync with the audio, is there anything I can do about this?

Ok we're getting there  I think!

When you joined them, under "Type" in the drop down menu in the Merge and Cut box, what did it select? Was it "MPEG 2 Program (VBR)"?

oops, nope, I didnt change the type... its just the first option which is MPEG-1, should I try again using MPEG-2 (VBR)?

Depends on if it is a MPEG2 file, but if it was used to make a DVD I'd expect it to be. MPEG1 is used on Video CD's (limited quality) while MPEG2 is used for DVD and also digital TV broadcasts.

One way to find out is choose the "De-Multiplex" tab in MPEG Tools and open up one of the original files (not the merged one). Don't click run, just note what appears in the information box and post back what it says :)

I checked were you asked me to and it is MPEG-1

I had already started converting it to MPEG-2 when I saw your message which has now finished. Bah :o in MPEG-2, the video is perfect :D shame there is no audio at all

Oh well, at least without audio I dont have to hear how common I sounded :)

    Thanks for the help

I have used the older version of this software many times before for joining mpegs.
Was a long time ago but it was a great bit of software.

The files were not .vob, they were .mpg but no, they were not out of sync before I merged them together.

There's an app called projectx that will join them. It's a very good app, but it's not the most intuitive of things to use. It's more about functionality than ease of use. With some perseverance it'll do the trick.

No problem :) It sounds like they are in some unusual format to me. If you want to, I would say it might be worth trying using the MPEG1 System (VBR) option. VBR stands for "variable bit rate" which I would say is uncommon in MPEG1 video files, but most MPEG2 uses it, which might explain why the MPEG2 option is smoother.

Why dont you convert them to AVI first with super http://www.afterdawn.com/software/video_software/video_encoders/super.cfm

Then join them with virtualdubmod ;)

Would of been done by now. ;)

Because they'd either then be uncompressed and massive or they'd need to be re-encoded and there'd be a drop in quality (tangible or not) , which is pointless when all the OP wants to do is join the files.

Errm... I've probably encoded more video than anyone else on the forum.

If the videos are mpeg2 just now, and you want to "convert them to avi", you'll HAVE to re-encode them. Whether that's to a lossless codec or not is beside the point. Lossless codec = massive increase in filesize. Lossy codec = drop in quality, by the very nature of being lossy. Use a high enough bitrate and you'll not perceive the quality drop, but it's still a pointless and time consuming task when all the OP wants to do is join several videos together.

    Nice avatar btw. ;)

When someone puts I have done this and I have done that it smacks of desperation and if you have encoded many a file you would of known by now that its Transcoding and not re-encode, also lossless codecs are found more presently in the sound file associated with the video file and VDM can take this out and save it as a WAV file.

Obviously as said you have not used super or you would know all about the bitrate conversion that can be attained within DivX containers associated with AVI.

    Lol @ the avatar.

I'm just explaining that I know what I'm on about, rather than being a pathetic little troll like yourself.

It's good that you just used all the right keywords, but you're talking crap. Re-encoding means the same as transcoding.

There are plenty of lossless video codecs, but I guess the by using your one-click solution you haven't delved too deeply into the subject.

Who uses divx these days anyway, when xvid pees all over it?

You still haven't explained why I'm wrong in saying that there will be a quality drop or a massive file at the end of the encoding session.

You still haven't explained why someone would bother re-encoding just to join files together.

If you're going to engage me in discussion then please do, but you seem unable to discuss something, all you can do is poke fun at people or be downright abusive.

    edit since you added more:

P.S Just to let you know I Transcode about 12 TV Programs a week and about 2Films a week and then convert to DVD to I doubt very much you have done more Transcoding than anyone on this forum.

    I'm positive I have. ;)
