Hanging strawberries?

I caught part of Jamie's programme yesterday where he was growing lots of strawberry plants in hanging baskets but I didn't catch whether they were a specific hanging variety or just normal ones that go in the ground. Does anyone know?

Also, when would be the best time to plant strawberries please?

Alpine strawberries grow really well in hanging baskets, but I couldnt get any last year so used normal ones which also did well but with a shorter cropping period.

You can grow any type of strawberry in hanging baskets as far as I know. Just make sure they don't dry out as that would effect the crop.

I have seen them grown in upright drain pipes with holes cut in them before now.

Here is a link to a blog from some one growing them in plastic bags hung up and in old hung up drain pipes. I like the drain pipe idea.

What a good idea - I have one of those green hanging bag things with cut-outs - I've never used it and certainly never thought of putting strawberries in them - mine are in an old cast iron bbq - will get some extras and put them in the bag this year - Lidls have 6x strawberry plants for £2.99 I noticed yesterday, they will do nicely :T

You will see if you read all his articles, he wasn't that impressed with growing strawberries like that.

I've tried, pots, buckets, a large homemade tower and in the ground. Without doubt if you have the space, in the ground is best, for the first time this year I am trying strawberries planted through weed fabric and hope that to mean I won't need to straw them.

Towers are a pain to use, the compost settles a LOT so expect to see your newly planted strawberries sliding down inside the hole. Leave it a while after filling with compost and water well before planting.

Yes, I did read the follow-up after I posted and noted how disappointed he was with them.

I don't currently have any prepared ground suitable for strawberries, but I do have lots of spare hanging baskets, hence why I took interest in Jamie's programme, so I think I will try that route this year and see how it goes :)

    hello all
completely new to gardening  so this may seem a really silly question but, here goes, when should strawberry plants be planted and what are the best conditions for them to be kept in for a good crop? unfortunately i do not have space to grow them in the ground and so i too would like to try and grow them in my spare hanging baskets.
any help would really, really be appreciated
    thank you

I did not read the follow up for the strawberries. It did make interesting reading. I still like the idea but it would appear to need some further adapting to work better.

As for when to plant strawberries. Now through to May depending on where in the country you are. Mine are already out having been planted last year. they havent started growing yet though. I have some in the greenhouse and they are starting to show signs of life.
  • Hi everyone, I have aquired some hanging baskets and I would like to try and grow strawberries in them. The problem lies in the fact that I have no idea where to begin with this. I have never grown anything before.
I would be so grateful if someone could tell me how to start. I'm afraid you might have to explain it as if you were explaining it to an alien, although even an alien might have more prior knowledge than me!

I had never thought of this but it sounds great, imagine coming home to fresh strawberries every day in the summer! I haven't tried it myself but would assume you propagate them in the warmth for a couple of weeks before planting. I can't wait to plant my baskets this year, roll on summertime.
