So the true meaning of "Your application has been referred" is in fact "Your application has been referred". Glad that's cleared up. ;)

And if you are declined then you have the right to appeal against the decision which makes someone look at the application again.

If you've gone to the bother of appealing and don't mind giving more detail of your finances then you might be able to overturn the initial refusal.

When you apply for a credit card or other credit product online and the application promises an instant decision - what does it mean when you get neither an Accept or Decline but instead get a "your application has been referred, we will write to you within 5 business days" message? Presumably if your credit score is high enough you will be instantly Approved and if your credit score is too low or there are other problems with your credit file, then the computer will pick those issues up and instantly Decline you.

Anything out of the ordinary tends to be referred. In my case, both OH and I are self employed. Whenever we've applied for credit, it's always referred, and always granted a few days later.

  • I've got a credit rating of 609 ((4*) credit report arrived last week) and have just been referred... is this a bad thing. Maybe it's because I'm 19...?

So what is the Referred business all about? Does it mean your credit score falls on the cusp of Pass/Fail? Since the credit providers rely quite heavily on automated decisions fueled by credit score, I don't understand why they don't just automatically Decline you if things aren't quite perfect, rather than Referring you. Can anyone explain or share an experience where they got Referred and yet ultimately actually did receive the credit product they'd applied for. I'm very curious! Thanks

i had the same for sainsburys yet was accepted a few days later with a £3000 limit so you arent out of the game yet i would say

  • sorry, also wanted to add i have been ref'd every time i have applied for a cc in the past 2 years, and been acccepted - with exception of sygma (big boo to them lol)

I found out, or rather suspect that it was due to a loan i have that is just coming to an end that was registered at my old adress, i did write to them re change of address but as it comes out DD i never realised that it still registered at the old property..i think i got ref'd cause of that - as since i have amended it again i seem to get auto accept/decilne
