Hi.. am doing switching research for my in laws.. currently on southern electric's airmiles no standing charge (no idea why)...
plugging their numbers into the top 3 comparison engines puts ebico top in all 3..
uswitch save £1474
energyhelpline save £132
Money supermarket LOSE £13

british gas comes second
us save £129
eh save £115
ms LOSE £29

I can't understand how 2 can say save - and one says lose. Am also nervous about ebico as the prices haven't changed since 2006. Also how did nasty old british gas do so well? I know if anyone knows it'll be people on this forum.

They use 1507 kwh of gas
5957 kwh of electricity with 30% economy 7

best regards and thanks timswf

Something wrong Tim....no commission is payable when moving to Ebico, that is why they can keep prices low.
Also if British Gas, probably their online click tariff, but they have a brutal service record.
Also Uswitch didn't even have Ebico on the main list until recently, and read the stickie up top about missing champagne.
Ebico are expected to raise prices anytime now perhaps not until September but then by the same percentage amount as Southern Energy...14.2% electric and 15% gas.

You need to recheck the figures, Tim, don't seem right to me.
Do your in laws have storage heaters.
Using my postcode, Ebico at the anticipated increase would be £654 as against £672 not much of a saving.
You must also allow for Quidco cashback with Scottish Power tis now £92, which again using my postcode shows an annual saving of £88 plus the one off £92.
Subject to you having quoted the correct p.a. usage.

Are you sure that they only use 1507kWh of gas and not 1507 units of gas?

A unit of gas is approx 11.1kWh or 31kWh of gas depending on your type of meter.
Also how did nasty old british gas do so well?

BG Click 5 tariff is quite competitive. But don't expect objectivity about their prices on this forum from some posters!!

Hi thanks Cardew.. kwh was direct from the southern electric bills - they do the conversion on them.. they do like it warm... good point re bg.

Any thoughts on why one of the sites said there'd be a loss rather than gain?rgds tim

Difficult to duplicate without your postcode, different areas different electricity prices. Scottish Power come top with me at those figures, but you do need to check it manually before committing. If still the cheapest, register with Quidco for the commission. Must be claimed all online.

    Still not clear.

1,507kWh for gas is tiny - the average is 20,500kWh

If "they do like it warm", 1,507kWh would not cover 2 weeks CH in most houses.

Are you sure you are inputting the correct data?

I've just created a simple gas units to kWh conversion table in MS Excel if anyone cares to try it out, you can get it from HERE.

You'll have to have Excel installed to use though.
    units2kwh.jpg

Just enter previous and current meter readings in the corresponding boxes (blue & green) and it will calculate total units and convert them to kWh.

Don't worry about entering data into the wrong cell and messing the formulas as only the above mentioned cells are unprotected.

If you need to alter either cell A8 or A9 then the password is 'mse' (without the quotes).

Let me know if any errors in the formulas.
