Do we haggle the price or simply pay up?

Sorry if this question has been asked many times before.
We have decided to buy our property from the Housing Association and filled in all the forms etc.
They have sent out a surveyor so we are simply waiting now on the price they will say the house is worth. It's a 3 bedroom house (end of terrace), large garden, 2 toilets etc.
Now, we are first time buyers. When the Housing give us a price, is that it? Or do we haggle and bargain?
Thanks.

Are you HA tenants ? If so, won't you get a discount? If not, it's worth an offer, you must already have some idea of the value of the property.
They can only say no - I wouldn't think most HA's are desperate to sell property - you can only ask0 -
Many thanks for your reply - much appreciated.
We were council tenants for over 10 years before we moved into HA property 3 years ago - we were told our time with the council will be taken into account so maybe we will be entitled to discount. If they don't take this off, we'll ask. Thanks again.0 -
Ooh I would be interested in the answer to your post. We attempted to make an offer on the HA we are buying presently.
A very snooty lady advised us as the HA is a 'non profit' organisation offers would not be accepted a full price only would be considered.
If that was a fib I will be less than happy!
Thanks

It looks as if you will be entitled to a discount, I would guess that there won't be any room for negotiation.
The discounts aren't as good as they would have been if you had been a council tenant and buying a council property. But the huge discounts of years ago were changed to much lower amounts.
I'm sure you already have an idea of your discount.
And good luck with your purchase.
HA discounts
discounts range from £9,000 to £16,000 depending on where you live- if you applied to the scheme after 18th January 2005, and decide you want to sell the property within five years of buying it you will have to repay some or all your discount - the amount you repay depends on the how long after you got the discount you want to sell.

For future reference, you can completely delete a post you made within a thread but if your post was the thread starter you can delete the contents of the post but not remove it completely.:heart2: Love isn't finding someone you can live with. It's finding someone you can't live without :heart2:0 -
It's very difficult to determine whether the price the HA wants is "fair" or inflated.
If it's fair, then I can understand the HA not accepting any offers. If it's inflated, but you get a discount, you really have to decide if the price they want is one you're prepared to pay.
There is no such thing as "the right price" .... all valuations are simply opinions.Warning ..... I'm a peri-menopausal axe-wielding maniac0
