My DH would like a small piece of music from an old DVD, it is not available at all other than on the DVD, I have checked and searched.
I have DVDshrinked the DVD so I can "play" with it, does anyone know a good piece of free software to make him happy.

Try http://audacity.sourceforge.net/ , it has an option to record 'what you hear' i.e. what is played back through the speakers.
Simply play back the dvd and click the record button, if you want the recorded sound as an mp3 you will need to download a codec, but audacity will prompt you were to get it from when you save as mp3.

Thanks Raptorman - I have downloaded audacity, but how do I tell it to record what is being played, do I need to use a special program to run the DVD with? tried both Windows Media Player, and Media Centre and just pressed record on Audacity but it doesnt pick up any sound?

you should be able to select the 'source' in audacity to the dvd. just play the dvd as normal and it should record the sound .
If your sound card has a 'line in' socket you can use a dvd player with the sound output going into your sound card, you will need the correct cable. Play the dvd and record the sound to mp3 with audacity.Nudge nudge, Wink wink, Say No More!0 -

Yes, you should be able to do that.I cannot just play it on the PC then?
But you have to set up Audacity so that it records whatever is coming through the speakers, whether it's CD or DVD or internet radio or anything.
Along the top of Audacity is a row of buttons. The red button is for 'record'.
Here's a screenshot:-

It's still not picking up anything, instead of the blue bands of colour showing noise,I have a flat line. I did press the Red button btw.
I have tried all the various output/input options and still it just flat lines.
Any more suggestions please.
