I heard a story on the radio this morning (Star Radio, Bristol) that people can now get a free electricity monitor for their homes to show how much electricity they use and how much it is costing them.
From the way the article was worded it sounded more like the type you clip onto your incomming mains supply and monitors the electricity usage for your entire house rather than a cheap plug-in unit.
Unfortunately they didn't say where people can get hold of these things and when I emailed the radio station's newsdesk they said all they knew was that it was a national news item and the scheme was launched in Manchester.
I've searched various places online (Google, BBC news, national newspapers, etc) and can find nothing.
Has anyone else heard anything about this?

Would that not be the same as the basic thing you get with your electricity box that tells you how much you have left etc?0

Free to NEW customers...... well you pay for it in the long run I am sure.
I think what Mr AZ said was right. just note down the reading and then keep an eye on it that way.
I find that you can see what is still making it whirr round when you leave things on then go round the house switching things off and see how it is then. That's how you find you're saving money!!!

Alas, according to NPower at https://www.npower.com, it's only free to business customers!0 -
Maybe it's a council environmental initiative? You could try emailing your local council about it.0

Saw this on the working lunch programme, found it very interesting.
It actually tells you the instant power consumption in kilo-watts, so by simply turning on the kettle while holding the device you can see the readings go up!
In my opinion this device helps you lower your consumption, as if you're reading is higher than normal you may realise you've left a heater on somewhere (and generally makes you more conscience). As a result I think the government or local councils should be subsidising this product. Anyone else agree?0 -
I think I spotted them in B & Q0

It is actually a new govt program and starts, I think the minister said, either in autumn of this year or the beginning of next. The electricity companies are currently in the process of organising the program. Keep your ear to the ground.0 -

Ahhh! thanks - I was beginning to think I was going mad
Still can't find any info on it though, even on the government's websites :mad:0
