Phone cutting off broadband

Hi,
I'm posting this on behalf of my parents so I'll try and give as much info as possible.
My parents recently switched to broadband, which all went smoothly (much to the surprise of my techno-phobe mother). However they recently bought a new phone which, when they use it, cuts off their broadband connection. So I told them I believed they needed a microfilter on the socket to stop this happening. This is where it gets complicated.
Now I live 180 miles from my parents so I'm trying to help them over the phone, but I'll try and explain the situation and see if anyone out there can offer a solution.
Their main BT socket is in the lounge. This just has a phone connected to it through a microfilter.
A workman they had in a while ago ran an extension cable apparently from the oblong shaped plastic BT connector (i.e. the one that the incomming BT line connects to, not the white BT socket) to their kitchen. Now I'm not sure what kind of cable this is, but I believe its a standard phone extension cable.
In the kitchen they have a double end (not a box, but just the end of an extension cable) that takes the new phone, and another phone extension cable to the spare room where it plugs into their broadband modem.
My mum tried putting another microfilter on the end of the cable in the kitchen but found that she just got a buzzing noise on the phone when she tried to use it.
I'm not exactly sure what the solution is, but I suspect the extension that goes to their kitchen needs to be replaced. I'm not sure the bloke should have taken it from where he did, but rather should have come off the main plug socket.
I don't know wether a standard telephone extension cable would be the same cable as the kind you wire from socket to socket?
If anyone can point me in the right direction then I would be extremely grateful, and I can pass the info on.

Tell them to try the other filter at the end of the line in the spare room. The filter should have two outlets, one for modem and one for phone but they don't need to have a phone plugged into it.

we have had so many problems with our b/band but hopefully its now sorted . we can only have one extension now tho which is the one that leads upstairs to the pc also only one micro filter not on the master phone socket but on the end of the extension we were also told that we can only have one extenion which would have to be the minimum length we need to get it upstairs so now i have a cordless phone that i take around the house with me hope this helps.0
