Woot, that worked :D Its obviously something wrong with XP. I'm going to have to see if I can track down an XP disk and go through the recovery on that. Why can't microsoft publish a download to do that on their site.

    Or do they? :D

Yes you can get online. Ethernet should configure itself, many wireless cards supported but usb modems might be a problem.
I have a dlink wireless card and it works fine with knoppix.

Ok, so I have got hold of a disk to use the recovery console. How do I use it to diagnose whats wrong? I was hoping I could just hit enter and it would do it for me but there are loads of different commands and I don't know what to do.

    http://www.webtree.ca/windowsxp/repair_xp.htm#How%20to%20Repair%20Windows%20XP%20by%20Installing%20Over%20top%20of%20Existing%20Setup:

If you cannot boot to the Desktop, or you have an OEM version of XP, or you want to remove a service pack then the following should be used to complete a Repair Install.
Boot with the Windows XP CD and at the Setup Screen press the Enter Key
    RC%20001.jpg

You will be taken to the Windows XP Licensing Agreement. After reading the agreement press F8 to proceed.
    Setup02.jpg
The next screen gives you the option to do a fresh (clean) install or to repair the selected Windows XP installation. To run a Repair Install Press "R" at this time.
***CAUTION*** if you do not see the option to repair the selected Windows XP installation DO NOT choose the option to continue installing a fresh copy without repairing as that will overwrite your data and cause unrecoverable data loss.

When Setup has completed you should find all of your previously installed apps and settings are intact.

you may need to do windows updates again

If you have any files you want to save you can use knoppix to save the files to
    flashdrive/cd before reinstalling XP.
