Woot, that worked
Its obviously something wrong with XP. I'm going to have to see if I can track down an XP disk and go through the recovery on that. Why can't microsoft publish a download to do that on their site.
Or do they?

My dad has a pro, but he will prob know someone with an XP disk.
Can I use this knoppix as a temp OS and get online until I can get an XP disk?Work like you don't need money,Love like you've never been hurt,And dance like no one's watchingSave the cheerleader, save the world!0 -
Yes you can get online. Ethernet should configure itself, many wireless cards supported but usb modems might be a problem.
I have a dlink wireless card and it works fine with knoppix.“I look like Spiderman at a funeral”~ Karl Pilkington0 -
Ok, so I have got hold of a disk to use the recovery console. How do I use it to diagnose whats wrong? I was hoping I could just hit enter and it would do it for me but there are loads of different commands and I don't know what to do.Work like you don't need money,Love like you've never been hurt,And dance like no one's watchingSave the cheerleader, save the world!0

http://www.webtree.ca/windowsxp/repair_xp.htm#How%20to%20Repair%20Windows%20XP%20by%20Installing%20Over%20top%20of%20Existing%20Setup:
If you cannot boot to the Desktop, or you have an OEM version of XP, or you want to remove a service pack then the following should be used to complete a Repair Install.
Boot with the Windows XP CD and at the Setup Screen press the Enter Key
You will be taken to the Windows XP Licensing Agreement. After reading the agreement press F8 to proceed.
The next screen gives you the option to do a fresh (clean) install or to repair the selected Windows XP installation. To run a Repair Install Press "R" at this time.
***CAUTION*** if you do not see the option to repair the selected Windows XP installation DO NOT choose the option to continue installing a fresh copy without repairing as that will overwrite your data and cause unrecoverable data loss.

If you have any files you want to save you can use knoppix to save the files to
flashdrive/cd before reinstalling XP."Gort, klaatu barada nikto"
