Late charge of £12 Debenhams store card

I was 3 days late paying my Debenhams bill and have been charged 86p interest which I dont mind paying and a late charge of £12.

I think this is really steep for 3 days over.Ive paid the complete sum anyway.

Is this legal for them to charge this much?

Thank you.

Without going into too much detail they've charged £12 as that's the amount in your T&Cs for a late payment and the amount outlined by the OFTs investigation into credit card charges.

Whether it's legal/lawful or illegal/unlawful is a debate you'll find elsewhere on this forum if you want to read up on it in detail.

Is this the first time it's happened? Most companies will refund the first charge as a gesture of goodwill, especially if you don't make a fuss of the interest.

Give them a call and let them know you think it's a bit unfair. Don't shout at the person obviously, a polite request for it to be refunded is usually enough. If not, ask to close the account and if they have a retentions team they will most likely refund it.

To be honest it did happen once before and they returned £12. Im going to cancel the card as I do have a bad memory, not due to insufficient funds and don't want to be penalised for 2 days late. Its ridiculous. They already get interest charges so why be greedy.

Its not greedy, its in the terms and conditions. late is late.

If you set up a direct debit for them to take the money so its paid in time then you will not have the problem of forgetting.

Definitely set up a direct debit to repay the full balance - this way you won't pay any interest on it either and will ensure no late payment fees and no late payment blips on your credit report.

No harm in phoning and asking them to refund it as a "long serving and valued customer who regularly spends on the card and has operated their card impeccably and they can confirm that the payment was received albeit a day or so late".

Whether its in the terms and conditions or not,it is still steep and greedy. Ive never come across this charge elsewhere. It is actually half the amount that I owed on the bill. they also never used to have this charge.

The interest charge on late payment of a couple of days is sufficient.

The best thing is if one doesnt like the terms and conditions is to cancel the card. I only got the card as they don't accept electron,as I dont normally use store cards.

If you read the T&C's of all credit card companies you will find they charge a late payment fee, usually £12.

Could have been worse they could have charged you £30.00. No good moaning you are in the wrong. Could have easily set up dd for min. amount but easier to moan after the event.

Tea and sympathy when it is due but in on this occasion I prescribe the shock treatment.
