speedtouch modem after a crash

<sigh>
Been having problems for the past few days and finally crashed big time yesterday am.
In the end I did a complete re-install of windows XP SP2 (though it's sure to be out of date for upgrades).
I re-installed my thompson speedtouch 330 usb modem, but can't get a connection. (My neighbours are hovering telling me to type faster)
The USB diagnostics say that the computer and the modem are fine but it won't connect.
According to the manual I should be able to select PPPoA or PPPover ATM (RFC 2364)
The only option I have is PPPoE and then it tries to connect over a WAN miniport (PPPOE)
Have I got a driver missing or something? Even the Thompson site is of no help.
He-e-elp please!
I'm absolutely stuck.

Have you had a look in device manager for any drivers that are missing, did you install the modem drivers?
start run then type devmgmt.msc and is their any drivers missing?0 -
Go to start/control panel/internet options/connections.
Is speedtouch the default connection? If not then remove the others if no other modem is used.
While in this section check your settings. Click on the settings tab and - Is your username and password correct? If not then clear and re-enter and try again.
If you still have the same problem please state here and I will give greater detail when I have more time later?

Yep, done all that, thanks.Have you had a look in device manager for any drivers that are missing, did you install the modem drivers?

Clean install of windows.
Clean install of the modem.
No (known) missing drivers.
The modem reports that it is connected and synchronised.
It's just the "connection protocols" that seem to be wrong.
There must be something that I haven't either installed or "activated" and I have no idea what it might be since nowhere am I getting any indication of "faults" or "problems".
It seems to be thinking that I want the PPPoE connection during setup and making a connection and nowhere do I see any options for using PPPoA etc.
So I'm still VERY stuck

I've tried it as both default and using it directly as an optional. User name and password aren't actually relevant here... the connection fails because it's using the wrong protocol.Hi, I'm a Board Guide on the Old Style and the Consumer Rights boards which means I'm a volunteer to help the boards run smoothly and can move and merge posts there. Heh! It helps to be on the right site! Thanks. I was on the .com and was left running round in circles.
I'll try the driver update, and I grabbed a test domain to log onto.

Nope.
The "update" is exactly the same version that I have.
The FAQ's don't cover it. (Error 678)
And when I click on the "submit a question..." link (top right) I get redirected to here:-

So guys... I'm still stuck.
If I have to have someone look at the machine it's going to have to wait until my next "payday" in ten days time.

Cracked it. But not with the speedtouch.
I'd checked that the default dial up connection was set to never dial.
The LAN was set for TCP/IP with auto resolve IP and DNS.
Internet options was set NOT to use a proxy and it STILL wouldn't work.
A good friend gave me their old router and that did the trick
As for the speedtouch... well, the router I have now doesn't need telling what my ISP is - it resolves the address from my login.
So I don't need to tell it to aim at:-
myISP.co.uk
My username for there is:-
username@MyLOGIN.co.uk
(Note the ISP isn't quite the same here!)
then password.
So, having done all that I'm now wondering, since the clean install set resolve IP and DNS if, in fact (with the connection for the speedwell set to be the default connection) if I couldn't have just left that first prompt box empty and just filled in my username and password.
And you know what? My system's working now so I ain't gonna go back to find out
It'll be worth a try in anybody else has error 678.Hi, I'm a Board Guide on the Old Style and the Consumer Rights boards which means I'm a volunteer to help the boards run smoothly and can move and merge posts there.
