(which is not a cable router but for use via phone line)
*Nearly* all DSL providers require a username and password. I only know of a few that don't. I'm not familiar with VM's DSL services but they probably do require it.They say it's genetic, they say he can't help it, they say you can catch it - but sometimes you're born with it0 -
sorry,
I hold my hands up, i thought when you said Virgin Media you were talking about cable & not ADSL.
I have spanked myself for this, repeatedly0 -

This assumes for our benefit that you treat that as a punishment rather than a normal evening.

Thanks for your help i have it working but ...
Although the internet works on the desktop pc it's not working on the laptop ... this was the initial problem which is why i reset the router (won't do that again)
I run the command to get the MAC address for my laptopn and it says
ethernet adapter wireless network connection
Media state - media disconnected
Description - Ralink Wireless Lan Card V2
Physical address [has my MAC address]
Does this mean the wireless card in my laptop is not on and how do i sort that - probably a silly question but never mind!
Thanks again0 -

It means you're not connected to the network at all, yeah. The network's on, because the desktop is connected via wireless, right? Should just be a case of replicating the desktop's settings on the laptop. They say it's genetic, they say he can't help it, they say you can catch it - but sometimes you're born with it0 -
Do you have the wireless icon at the bottom right of your screen? The one that looks like a little monitor?
Are you sure your wireless adapter is switched on?0
