No internet connection after re-setting router

I reset my router to factory settings yesterday and now i can't get an internet connection to my desktop pc.
My laptop can connect to my router ok but of course there's no internet available - I am with virgin broadband.
Is there something i need to amend because even discounting the router, there's no internet even on my PC

Why on earth did you hit the reset button/return to factory defaults !!!!!!! when you do not know what you have to do afterwards, you must read the manual or the information supplied by the ISP.
When you set the router to factory default, it loses all your settings !!!! you will have to put in your settings eg username and password as supplied by ISP.
If it wasn't broke ---- why fix it ?0 -

Cable routers dont use user names & passwords.
switch off your cable modem & router, wait 30 secs and turn on your cable modem, wait till its stops flashing the synch light, about another 30 secs, then switch on your router.
This has always worked for me.

Duh! There could be a zillion things at fault.
I'd start checking the router configuration, especially DHCP if you use static IPs. If you can connect to the local network but not the internet, then check your DNS settings.0 -
well i figured that if i set it up in the first place, i would be able to repeat the process again.
Reason = I forgot the password to log onto the router (which is not a cable router but for use via phone line). I have changed it from the default password of *PASSWORD* and forgot it!
I'm lost!
I don't need a password as far as i know to log onto Virgin BB but correct me if I am wrong.
I am in the process of changing from Virgin BB (as the service is very poor) and recently requested a MAC code ... this couldn't be it could it?0 -
MAC addresses are also called hardware address. They are a unique address that defines a piece of hardware (NIC, router, etc). Thus, each piece of hardware has one, and you can't just request a new one.
My BlueYonder (now Virgin) connection only used to work with the MAC address I originally "registered" (i.e. the address of the first NIC with which I was first connected). When using a router, that means I needed to clone the MAC address of my NIC, which you should be able to do from your router settings.
However, lately, my connection works without needing to clone the NIC MAC, and since you have Virgin as well, I'd say that the MAC address is not your problem.
*EDIT* btw, in my previous post, It should read check your DHCP settings if you use DYNAMIC IPs.0 -

That would be Media Access Control. I think in this instance MAC may refer to the Migration Authorisation Code that you need to switch from one broadband provider to another, which has nothing to do with router configuration.MAC addresses are also called hardware address.
In any case, restoring a router's default settings should reset the password in addition to everything else. Once you have access to your router's configuration menu, you shouldn't have much of a problem setting it up again.0 -

yeah the MAC (migration) is required to switch ISP's and thought i might have been 'cut off' by Virgin by requesting this but now realise it's just like a PAC code for switching mobile providers!
I am still not sure what to do when i get home to try and resolve this issue!0
