We have been offered the chance to have a solar heating system installed that will heat our water. The company state that we can expect savings in the region of £300 a year (3 bed, 4 people house). Does this seem right? Has anyone else had this system fitted (the company is called Sunstar)?

Loads of threads on this in the 'Green' forum.
The average family spends approx £100 - 150 a year on Hot Water. If you save 50% of this you will be extremely lucky.
DTI tested 8 systems under controlled conditions and the average output per year was approx 1,000kWh which if you have gas will save approx £25 - oil approx £45.
Trading Standards offices across the land are inundated with complaints about these firms and their stupid claims and outrageous prices. Simplee Solar was one of the main firms for court action taken against them, the main base for the 'Industry' is Dorset.
Ring your local trading office and have a chat.
P.S.
How much do they want for the system?0
