i think its a non starter, why would someone employ you as a tutor when the next guy has been a plumber for 20 to 30 years, who would they pick,

They would pick the person with the most ability & qualifications to teach the course which has got nothing to do with 20-30 years experience.

Because I know of several people who have completed a fast track course who have then immediately gone on to work for reputable, long established plumbing companies and have worked on very high profile sites in my locality.

Plumbing is a trade so why would a plumbing company ignore a plumber that is qualified to do the job just because they did it quicker than somebody else who took years?
  • I did a C&G in Marine Plumbing & Coppersmiths work at college in the early 90's. I then joined the Army and never once used my quals.

I'm redundant in 2 weeks, and was looking at short courses, but was put off by everyone saying "no-one looks at people who have done short corses as they haven't got enough experience. There are plenty of people coming off 3 year apprenticeships with plenty of on-the-job experience"...

Don't use OLCI. The tools they provide are of unacceptable standard and the "workshops" are in terrible condition.

  • Interesting thread revival.

To become a plumbing tutor you would need at least 5 years recent and relevant plumbing experience - plumbing itself is a longer apprenticeship than other trades due to the complexity of the trade.

Also, there are lots of plumbers out there who have been made redundant and I am not sure of the numbers [it's been a while since I was at the cutting edge of that industry] but I've also not seen many 'demand for plumbing tutors is reaching an all time high' reports recently.

Bearing in mind the surge in people doing plumbing courses about 8 years ago [after the Sun expose on the wages of mystery plumbers] - I imagine that plenty of them ended up being tutors in the end.
If you haven't got it - please don't flaunt it. TIA.

I disagree that the tools are unacceptable standard & the "workshops" are in terrible condition.

Perhaps you would like to share more information about where exactly you experienced it?

Birmingham is fine. However they could do with some more leads for their Megger testers if you are doing electrics.

    Oh yes it is!

All you pretty much need is the qualification & a teaching qualification or assessing qualification to prove you can & are qualified to deliver the course.

Nowt to do with 5 years experience in plumbing.
