I posted a standard paperback yesterday for £1.20 - if its under 2.5cm thick (wrapped) then it would have only cost 60p

The postage rates go up Monday though so instead of 60p it would be 66p

Just an idea, but I list all mine on Amazon and green metropolis as neither costs unless the book sells, only problem would be if someone buys from both at the exact same time - but for normal books its very unlikely

Play.com is good for selling books, CDs and DVDs. No fees unless the item sells.
What are the fees for using PlayTrade?

Our fees are an incredibly low 10% commission plus 50p per completed sale. If you plan to sell a lot of items we recommend you apply to become a ProTrader. A ProTrader does not incur the 50p closing fee and can list as many items as they want. A ProTrader account costs £19.99 per month.
If you decide to transfer your cash to your bank account there is a 5% transfer fee on the balance you choose to transfer. However if you spend the money at Play.com there is no charge, saving you the 5% transfer fee altogether!
Full information about PlayTrade fees can be found in Fees Guidelines.

I have sold loads of items in the last 6 months and made over £400 just by getting rid of all the stuff I no longer read, listen to or watch.

    You can sell games too

You may be interested to know that play.com is offering people free listings for selling stuff in April on its site.

Also, its worth noting with play.com that you can only redeem your cash on play.com products. Only handy really if you buy from them alot.

A word of warning selling books ... if they've been in a place where someone has been smoking, the book retains the stale smoke smell. This is immediately obvious to a non-smoker.

If you're certain they've not been exposed to tobacco smoke, then say so in the description. On the other hand, if they have a "scent" of stale smoke, make this clear too, otherwise you'll have a return to deal with!

That's incorrect. You can withdraw the money to your bank account but you get deducted 5% of the amount as a fee. If you were to keep it in account and spend on Play then you get 100% of the money, as opposed to 95% when paid to bank account.

Listings are always free on Play.com nathan - you only pay fees when the item sells

And as the post above says, you can withdrawn money to your bank account with 5% fee to pay.

Don't think they give great returns but worth a look.

Before you spend ages putting all your books up for sale, reserch on ebay, and amazon and play, to see whether they will sell, and what they are likely to be worth so you price them correctly.

Some out of print books especially pristine condition hardback first editions can be quite valuable.
Some books are in high demand, especially by specific authors (JK Rowling, Ian McEwan ect), in newish hardback or paperback.

And others eg tatty paperback james herberts, danielle steeles will not sell for love nor money this way. Though you might get a few pence at a secondhand book shop.

There's never been a better time to try out PlayTrade, the new entertainment marketplace from Play.com. Throughout April you can sell up to 10 items on PlayTrade without paying any commission.
Give the house a Spring Clean, and find a home for all of those DVDs, Games, CDs and Books gathering dust on the shelves!
    How it works:
    1. Your first 10 sales during April will have their seller fees refunded.
    2. If you already have products for sale through PlayTrade, you don't need to re-list them. Both new and old listings are covered by the promotion.
    3. To qualify for the refund of fees, any orders should be dispatched to the customer within 2 days.
    4. The 10% commission fee and the 50p closing fee will be refunded once you confirm dispatch. The refund may take up to 24 hours to appear in your PlayFunds account.
    5. You will be credited with 100% of the sale value in your PlayFunds account.
    6. If you wish to withdraw your funds instead of spending them on site, this will be subject to a 5% transfer fee.
    7. If you are lucky enough to sell more than 10 items, our normal fees will apply from the 11th onwards. Please see our fees page for more details.
