Sky - moving house, not straightforward

I've currently got Sky+, had it for over 12 months. This month got Sky Broadband as well.
I'm moving house in June, and would like to keep Sky+. There is already a dish and a Sky+ box at the house I'm moving to, which is in Hull where you cannot get Sky Talk/Broadband (because there's no BT lines, it's Kingston Communications throughout the area).
The house I'm moving to is my parents' house, which they're moving out of before June to a new house (where they've already set up a new Sky account).
So what's the best way for me to do this? Can I transfer my subscription to the new house without having to pay a moving fee (as there's no equipment to set up)? Or do I cancel my Sky account (is it 30 days' notice?), and watch Sky using the subscription that's in my parents' name? Will the broadband provide any further complications? I asked on the phone before I signed up for it whether I could cancel it before the 12 months contract is up in the event I cancel my Sky TV subscription and they said I would have to, but I didn't get it in writing.

Hi libertino,
I've just been through almost exactly the same process.
I moved out of my parents place where I had a Sky+ subscription with broadband into a new place which previously had Sky+ (not sure about broadband).
This is how I played it.
1. Moved into place and plugged in my Sky+ box to existing dish cables. It worked perfectly (as Sky had ensured me it would).
2. Rang BT and ordered a phone line.
3. Waited for BT line to activate (2 working days).
4. Called Sky to move my subscription. As there is no installation required there was no fee. They cant move the broadband subscription, they have to cancel your old one and then you reorder it at the new property.
5. On same day as I moved my subscription I ordered my mother Sky Tv at the house I moved out of.
6. I am now waiting for my Sky broadband to stop working at my mothers house before I order it for her at hers and me at mine.
Broadband takes about 10 days to cancel and then 10 days to reactivate but can be anytime up to that limit.
Its very tempting to rush things and order my mothers broadband before mine has been cancelled but having had friends have no broadband for 9 months due to this I've decided to be patient and wait for everything to happen correctly. So if your parents haven't moved their Sky subscription yet I'd strongly advise waiting for that to happen.
Hope this helps.

You only pay a moving fee if Sky come out to your home0

Unplug box, plug in at new house. Phone Sky up to tell them change of address.
By the way, Karoo sux. I paid £170 to have a BT line re-instated (don't live in Hull but live in East Yorks and Kingston Comms had lines here) and new ADSL connection because on an evening, it's like being on dialup. When you subscribe, go for Option 2. Option 4 is the top dog package but no faster.0 -
if your out of contract, cancel sky at your current home, get a referral from your parents for your new one, quids in!
sorry to hear about having to use KC, guess you won't be using the net much...Utinam logica falsa tuam philosophiam totam suffodiant.0 -
Fully agree tonyhague
We moved, and were out of the 12 month period. Sky wanted £50 to install my Sky box in the new house.
So I cancelled my Sky. Joined up as a new customer at the new address, got over £100 from Quidco as cashback and also got a free install and a new digibox and minidish - the old box will do fine as a spare or watching the free channels and I gave my old dish to a mate. Serves them right for treating existing customers as scum.
One tip - when you resubscribe, do so from a different bank account.0 -
You don't need to pay them to move unless there needs to be a new dish or cables installed.0

A few months after I move I'll be going abroad so will be cancelling Sky then anyway, so I won't be signing up as a new customer as I'd be tied to a 12 month contract.
The best thing to do is just move my account then? When you move, you don't get tied to a new 12-month contract do you? What do I need to do, just give 30 days' notice of when I'll be moving (and inform them that I can't take Sky Talk+Broadband with me)?0 -
Hi libertino,
when you 'move house' you don't get tied to a new 12 month contract, no. As far as I am aware there is no notice period for moving house, just phone them up and give them details of your new address.
Inform them that you cannot get Sky Talk/Broadband in the house and so would like to cancel it. This process can take up to 10 working days according to Sky.
Coincidentally, having just moved myself I also could not get Sky Broadband either (unless I was willing to pay £17.99 for the Mid package) and had to cancel. Sky did not put up any sort of fight or impose any fee's.
Hope this helps and good luck with the move

You should never pay a moving fee to sky. They tried to make me pay that but I told them I will just cancel and sign up as a new customer and get it for free. I said it will just cause you more paperwork setting it all up again and cancelling it so you may as well sort it out for free. So they did. Couldn't have it in the end though as the tree in the garden blocks out the signal. Damn.0

Phoned Sky to inform them I'm moving house.
They said my Sky PLUS subscription started 21st June 07 (I had been on normal Sky for a year before that), so as I'm under Sky+ subscription until 21st June 08 I have to pay the £50 for an engineer as I'm not allowed to install it myself. I said I will wait until the 21st and install it myself then, and just go without it for 3 weeks (I'm moving on 2nd June). They said I can do that. What would happen if I do plug my box in at the new address before the 21st?
Sky Talk has been cancelled without a problem. I need to email/write to Sky Broadband because I'm breaking my contract (I only signed up to it in March 08), and you're only allowed to do that if you stop your Sky TV subscription. Hopefully they'll accept my genuine reason, but if not they said I might have to pay the remainder of my contract. If they say I have to do that I'll just tell them I'm going to cancel my Sky TV subscription.0
