Which ingredients do you make and which do you buy?

I know there are lots of ingredients that I cook/make at home to save money for example I make my own

Jam (fruit grown in my garden)
Pesto (grow in pots and made from scratch)
Pasta (once or twice a month)
Gnocchi (make loads and freeze)
Flavoured olive oils
crushed chillis (grown my own and dry them)
Chutney (apple grown in garden)
Baked beans
shortcrust pastry
chocolate spread
peanut butter
pickled peppers
Passata (yes I make my own. For the last three summers have bought 40 cases of fresh tomatoes, boiled them down, sieved them and then transferred them into recycled bottles- used to do this with my family in Italy and then they used to be sent over on lorries already coming over to London anyway- now make them here)

Somethings I will never make and buy instead
ketchup
mayonnaise
custard
puff pastry
filo pastry
ice cream
croissants
corned beef

I think thats about it for now, just be interested what others do

I sometimes make my own Ice cream when I get free plums from a friend, I have made corned beef which is so much better than that which we buy and homemade custard is delicious but I do it for special occasions. Always make jam, never buy it.
  • I make my own bread and yogurt. Also recently I made my own cole slaw and it was nicer than the shop bought stuff and much cheaper.

This is a really interesting thread. Does anyone have the definitive recipe for corned beef?

wow that is quite a list..... especially impressed that you make your own ketchup (mine never tastes quite right  ) and your own icream (never had enough space in the freezer or on the kitchen worktop for the machine/bowl to even attempt it!)

I don't think you can replicate the taste of Heinz Tomato Ketchup so I make an old family recipe and dont even compare it to the bought stuff and that seems to help IYKWIM.The kids love it so I keep on making it

As for Ice Cream I have one of the machines with the built in freezer.I tried the freezer bowls but like you never seemed to have enough room to keep the bowl in there permanently and the darn thing was never frozen when I wanted to make some ice cream:eek: .I tend to do my ice cream in batches because its just as fiddly making 2 litres as 0.5litre.

You don't need a machine to make ice cream just a bowl and a plastic tub for the freezer.
