Money transferred into my account - from where?

Hi
Can anyone advise me?
I have a NatWest account and in June 2006 £7,500 transferred into my account with a european reference no. It's an account I only use twice a year and this amount is still in.
Can I transfer this money to a higher interest account at NatWest? Or is this unlawful?
I have not been into the branch to query it - should I have done this?
No-one has queried it - how long does it have to be in NatWest account?
Look foward to your advice

    The simple answer is, it isn't yours.

    You should inform the bank.

    There is some argument that, if it isn't reclaimed within six years, it would not be enforceable as a debt. So then, in theory yours, but there is no proof of this.

    To be fair the fact that the OP doesnt know if it is hers , doesnt mean it isnt:D

    Sorry to be boring Mrs Jacko but there is actually a law against this... the Theft (Amendment) Act 1996 updates s.24 Theft Act 1968 to say "A person is guilty of an offence if—

    (a) a wrongful credit has been made to an account kept by him or in respect of which he has any right or interest;

    (b) he knows or believes that the credit is wrongful; and

    (c) he dishonestly fails to take such steps as are reasonable in the circumstances to secure that the credit is cancelled. "
